Volpe Gets Short

Level 14

No-Limit Hold'em

Paul Volpe raised to 8,000 from under the gun off a short stack and was then three-bet to 20,000 by Marco Johnson on the button. Volpe gave it some consideration and elected to call, then checked the {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop. Johnson plucked in a tower of T-5,000 chips worth 80,000 and that had Volpe's remaining stack covered.

No call followed as Volpe opted to preserve his short stack.

Double-Ups for Andrulis and Claassen

Level 14
Christopher Claassen
Christopher Claassen

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo

Kristijonas Andrulis: {j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} / {2-Clubs}{8-Spades}{j-Spades}{3-Hearts} / {9-Clubs}

The cards of Nacho Barbero were already meshed and all but a pair of queens was showing. In the meanwhile, Kristijonas Andrulis had missed his low but made jacks and treys for the double. As he reflected upon the hand, Andrulis sighed and said "I am stupid".

One table over, there was also an all-in and call in a No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw hand. Joao Vieira looked up Christopher Claassen, who had selected the variant. Claassen's {9-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{2-} were good enough for a full double as Vieira only had a ten-nine.

Matusow Making Moves

Level 14
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Marco Johnson raised in the cutoff and was called by Mike Matusow in the big blind.

Both players drew two, then Matusow led out with a bet, which Johnson called.

Matusow then drew one card, while Johnson also drew one.

Again Matusow bet and once more Johnson called.

On the final draw, each player patted, then checked.

Matusow fanned {8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-} and Johnson mucked his hand.

Kihara Chops With a Nice Call

Level 14

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo

Felipe Ramos: {x-}{x-} / {8-Spades}{2-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs} / {x-}
Naoya Kihara: {x-}{x-} / {5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} / {x-}

Felipe Ramos bet sixth and seventh street and the final bet sent Naoya Kihara into the tank. The Japanese mixed game specialist mulled it over for a bit and then called. Ramos tabled the {a-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for a 7-5 low and missed flush and wheel draws. Kihara chopped with the {j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for just a pair of jacks to take the high half of the pot.

Galfond Sent Deep Into the Tank by O'Hara

Level 14
Phil Galfond
Phil Galfond

No-Limit Hold'em

Picking action up on a {6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop and about 90,000 in the pot already, Ian O'Hara checked in the hijack to Phil Galfond on the button, who bet 25,000. O'Hara called.

On the turn {4-Clubs}, O'Hara check-called another 60,000 from Galfond to see the river bring the {7-Diamonds} putting a straight on the board.

O'Hara now moved all in for 132,000, which was approximately 50,000 less than Galfond had in front of him.

Galfond went deep into the tank, thinking for over five minutes, before hesitantly picking up his cards and tossing them to the muck, leaving himself a bit under 200,000 chips.

Kalas Knocked Out by Bojang

Level 14
Kane Kalas
Kane Kalas

Omaha Hi-Lo

The stack of Kane Kalas had taken several hits and he ended up all-in and at risk in an Omaha Hi-Lo hand against Ismael Bojang. His {10-}{10-}{5-}{3-} were in dire shape versus {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and there was no miracle escape on the {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts} board as the aces of Bojang held up.

In the meanwhile, Tuan Le has stormed to the biggest stack on the table and surpassed Mike Gorodinsky by quite a margin while Richard Ashby and Mark Gregorich are short.

With now 27 players remaining, the bubble is slowly but surely approaching some half an hour prior to the dinner break on Day 2.

Volpe and Yu in the Danger Zone

Level 14

Badacey

Ben Yu raised in the cutoff, Mike Matusow three-bet in the small blind and Marco Johnson four-bet in the big blind. Both opponents called and Matusow as well as Johnson discarded one while Yu took two. Matusow checked, Johnson bet and received two calls.

On the second draw, Matusow took one again, Johnson patted and Yu discarded two cards once more. Only Matusow check-called a bet by Johnson and then took one new card while Johnson patted it back. Matusow ended up check-calling a bet and mucked when Johnson tabled the {7-Clubs} / {6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts} for a Six-Dugi and a seventy-six.

With Yu forfeiting the pot, he plummeted to a short stack and joined Paul Volpe on the ropes.

Gregorich Eliminates Ashby in Huge Five Card Draw Pot

Level 14
Mark Gregorich
Mark Gregorich

Five Card Draw High

Tuan Le raised to 13,000 in the hijack and was called by both Mark Gregorich on the button and Richard Ashby in the big blind.

Ashby drew one, Le drew one and Gregorich drew two.

After the draw, Ashby led out for his remaining stack of 53,000 chips. After some deliberation, Le called. Gregorich then quickly called behind as well.

Le first showed {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} for two pair, nines and threes.

Ashby showed {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for a flush, which in most cases would be the winner, but Gregorich then showed {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades} for a full house, earning him a sizeable pot and eliminating Ashby from the tournament.

Yu Runs Out of Chips Eventually

Level 14
Ben Yu
Ben Yu

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Off a short stack, Ben Yu raised from under the gun and had exactly 10,000 chips behind. He was called by Greg Mueller in the big blind, who discarded three and Yu discarded two. Mueller then bet and Yu just called, now with 2,000 behind.

Mueller took one new card while Yu took two once more. The bet by Mueller brought the all-in call of Yu and Mueller patted the final draw as Yu needed two new cards once more.

Mueller rolled over his {7-}{6-}{5-}{2-} and Yu was alive with a {6-}{4-}{2-} draw. However, it was all over with the {9-} and the {k-} as final card became a formality already. There are now 25 players remaining and the field will be down to four tables after the next elimination.
