Phil Ivey Second in Chips to Start Day 2 of the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Day 2 of the third championship event of the 2022 WSOP, Event #22: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship will get underway at 2 p.m. local time with 41 players out of a field of 85 still in the hunt. Registration is still open until the start of play, so it is possible that a few more hopefuls will hop in with a fresh 60,000 stack at Level 11 of play.

The field is littered with big names including the largest stacks. Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier is on top of the pile with 262,000. He registered late in Day 1 and spun his stack up rapidly into the chip lead.

Phil Ivey enters the day second in chips with 256,500. The ever-popular figure at the WSOP, Ivey is traditionally one of the best seven card stud players around so this may be one of his best shots to break his eight year WSOP Bracelet drought and take home bracelet number eleven.

Outside of the big stacks, several known players are still alive on Day 2, including the defending champion of this event, Anthony Zinno, who has 68,000. He will be looking to spin his stack up and go for the back-to-back achievement.

Adam Friedman (153,000}, Brian Rast (108,000) and Todd Brunson (46,000) are also among the big names still remaining on Day 2 as well as recent 10k Dealer's choice champion, Ben Diebold (112,000)

The levels elongate on Day 2 to 90 minutes. The plan for Day 2 is to play seven 90-minute levels, with 10-minute breaks after each level and some extended breaks when decided upon and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 14 (~8:30). After that, the few fortunate enough to survive the day, will bag up and advance to Day 3.

PokerNews will be on hand tomorrow to cover all the Day 2 action.

After Bertrand Grospelier and Vasili Lazarou folded on fifth street, Cary Katz and Chris Tryba were left heads up after Tryba bet fifth and Katz called.

On sixth street, Tryba continued betting with three spades and a pair of fives and Katz again called now showing four to Broadway.

Action slowed with a pair of checks on seventh street and Katz announced "three pair" and showed pairs of kings, queens, and jacks, with the kings and queens playing for two pair to take down the hand.

Kevin Gerhart: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}/{5-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}/{8-Clubs}

Kevin Gerhart Just alerted the PokerNews reporting team to a hand that's seen him rocket into the chip lead, sending Peter Gelencser home and putting Hasan Kural on a short stack.

Gerhart says he began with rolled-up fives and was able to get three bets in four-ways on third street, another bet on fourth, then get a raise in on fifth street as the big bets started, with each of his opponents sticking around to face another bet on sixth.

Finally on seventh street with Gerhart still betting, all three of his opponents folded and he earned a huge pot to put him into the chip lead.

Ben Diebold: {5-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}/{k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}

Every player at the table entered the pot as fourth street was dealt for a true family pot.

Brandon Cantu bet 5,000 on fourth street. Ben Diebold raised to 10,000 and said "let's see if we can get some people out of here". Which he did as, Kevin Gerhart, Thomas Taylor and Yueqi Zhu all folded. John Lytle and Oxana Cummings called and Cantu also called the raise to bring four players to fifth street.

On fifth street, Diebold bet with the lead and all three of his opponents called.

On sixth street, it checked to Cummings who bet, Cantu folded, Diebold called and Lytle also folded to make it a heads up pot going into seventh street. Diebold check-called the bet from Cummings on seventh.

Cummings said she only had a pair and Diebold tabled the {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} for aces up which won the family pot leaving Cummings short who would bust shortly afterwards.

Ben Diebold: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}/{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}/{3-Hearts}

After losing that recent huge pot to a mega-cooler, Brandon Cantu was on the right end of one to double up through Ben Diebold.

Cantu and Diebold got four bets each in on third street, then Cantu led fourth and fifth, receiving calls from Diebold.

After Cantu bet again on sixth, Diebold raised, and Cantu put his final 17,000 chips in the middle.

Cantu had aces in the hole for eights full of aces, while Diebold had started with rolled-up tens but now needed to improve.

Cantu was unable to pair up on seventh for a better full house, while just for fun, Cantu was dealt the final eight in the deck to make quads and double up to 100,000 chips.

Down to just 17,000 chips, Day 1 leader Bertrand Grospellier raised Cary Katz's bring-in.

Action folded around to Katz who then raised and "Elky" put the rest of his chips in.

After the cards ran out, Katz's pair of fives pipped Grospellier's pair of threes, and the Day 1 chip leader was sent to the rail.

Straight Flush Crushes Two Flushes

Yehuda Buchalter: {2-Spades}{9-Spades}{k-Spades}{j-Clubs}/{x-}{x-}{x-}

Action was picked up on sixth street where Yehuda Buchalter bet, Brian Lieberman called with four to a straight flush showing and Yueqi Zhu came along also.

Zhu checked seventh street, Buchalter bet 12,000. Lieberman raised to 24,000 which got Zhu to stand up and go into the tank. He thought it out for quite some time while standing before sitting and throwing in the chips in a manner that looked like a painful and reluctant call. Buchalter got out of the way.

"Got the straight flush?" asked Zhu.

"Yep," said Lieberman and tabled the {7-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{10-Spades} for the straight flush.

Zhu tossed over his own {10-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Clubs} ace-high flush and voiced his frustration. "I can never get a break!" he said as he shook his head and explained his reasoning for calling.

Buchalter claimed that he had folded a king-high flush to put the cherry on top of the crazy hand, where all three players had flushes by fifth street.

Ben Diebold raised on third street and was called by Todd Brunson. Diebold then bet fourth street and was called, but then checked on fifth street, prompting a bet from Brunson.

Diebold then check-raised Brunson but still received a call.

Diebold bet sixth and seventh with Brunson calling down.

Diebold showed trip jacks on the end, while Brunson showed kings and eights for a losing two pair.

In a hand shortly after, Diebold won a pot from Jean Gaspard to vault him over 600,000 chips and solidly into the chip lead.

On third street, Cary Katz raised Adam Friedman's bring-in and was called by Kane Kalas. Todd Brunson then made it two bets and Friedman folded his bring-in. Katz then made it three bets to go and Kalas folded. Brunson made the call and was getting very short-stacked.

On fourth street Brunson called another bet from Katz, and after Katz bet again on fifth, Brunson got the last of his chips in the middle.

Katz held two pair with queens and jacks, while Brunson only had queens with a king overcard.

Brunson wouldn't be able to improve his hand and he was eliminated just before the dinner break, leaving 17 players in the field, with only two more eliminations until the money is reached.

After losing a recent pot that dropped him under 70,000 chips, Phil Ivey has gotten healthier again thanks to a pot with Adam Friedman.

Picking the action up on fifth street, Friedman bet with a pair of sixes on board and was called by Ivey. After Friedman double paired his board on sixth he bet again, but Ivey was undeterred and called.

Friedman then checked seventh street and Ivey went into the tank. Ultimately he decided to check.

Friedman declared "queens and jacks", showing jacks in the hole to improve his two pair.

Ivey however showed his aces in the hole for a better two pair with another deuce in the hole as well to take the pot and boost his stack back to 200,000.
