Given this was the first time the WSOP put on a bracelet event dedicated solely to Badugi, there were doubts as to the level of interest there would be in the variant. The entry numbers, however, entirely put those doubts to rest as they compare favourably with other mixed game $1,500 buy-in fields, even surpassing such events as the $1,500 Dealer's Choice and $1,500 Stud in size.

The 516 entrants generated a prize pool of $688,860 that will be split among the top 78 finishers, each of whom is guaranteed $2,409, although all eyes will be on the $144,678 and WSOP gold bracelet that go the eventual winner's way.

Among the many to take their seat at some point during the day and still be there at the end of the final level included three-time $10,000 Dealer's Choice champion Adam Friedman (126,500), 2022 WSOP POY Daniel Zack (120,500), and six-time WSOP bracelet winner Brian Hastings (118,000).

Other well-known names to take their shot but fall short included Poker Hall of Famer Barry Greenstein, Allen Kessler and birthday boy Benny Glaser.

The remaining players return to their seats at 1:00 p.m. on June 8 to play ten 60-minute levels, with blinds resuming in Level 16 at 1,500/3,000 with limits of 3,000/6,000. The money bubble has not yet burst, so there is everything to play for as the PokerNews live reporting team continues to provide live coverage throughout this three-day tournament.

With one draw left, Chris Clark in the cut-off, asked the table to pick one of two cards to swap, and the player on the button chose for him. Clark and Shaun Deeb, in the big blind, both drew one. Deeb bet and Clark called.

"Did he choose the right one?", asked Deeb. "No", came the reply.

"Good", said Deeb, and tabled 543A to take the pot

David Bell won another pot, at a table containing not one, but two WSOP 2023 bracelet winners.

The Two Failed Bluffs in One Week that Cost Doug Polk $700k

Level 6
Doug Polk
Doug Polk

Chris Moneymaker had the Bluff of the Century in 2003. This past week, Doug Polk had perhaps the Failed Bluff of the Century.

On Sunday, heads-up for a bracelet, Polk bluffed off a significant portion of his stack at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) less than one week after his infamous bluff attempt that didn't get through on Hustler Casino Live's $1 million game.

In both instances, the Upswing Poker founder had a busted draw and attempted to use aggression to coerce his opponents into folding somewhat marginal holdings in massive pots. Both times, however, his efforts were unsuccessful and quite costly.

Bell Takes From Bracelet Winner

Joseph Altomonte
Joseph Altomonte

Last night's $600 PLO Deepstack winner, Joseph Altomonte, has wasted no time getting his grind back on.

Altomonte raised from under the gun and got four callers. He stood pat, bet 400 but couldn't persuade anyone to fold. He patted again and bet 800.

The button called and David Bell in the small blind, raised. Altomonte raised again, and Bell capped the betting at 4000.

All three players patted. Bell bet again, and when both opponents called, tabled 632A and took down the pot.

David ODB Baker

A player in the cutoff opened and was called by Chino Rheem on the button as well as David "ODB" Baker in the big blind.

Baker and the cutoff took one card on the first draw while Rheem opted for two. Action then checked to Rheem, who bet and received two calls.

All three players drew one on the second draw before Baker took over the betting lead. The cutoff folded but Rheem made the call.

Both Baker and Rheem stood pat after which Baker bet again. Rheem called but mucked after Baker announced "seven perfect", tabling 732A.

Level 3
Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

A player in the cutoff opened and was called by Barry Greenstein on the button as well as both blinds.

The blinds and cutoff all took one on the first draw while Greenstein opted for two cards. Action then checked to the cutoff who bet, receiving calls from all three opponents.

The second draw saw each of the players take one card before action checked through to the final draw.

All of the players drew one final card before the blinds checked. The cutoff bet, Greenstein called and the two remaining players got out of the way. Greenstein then showed down 963A for nine-six badugi, taking down the pot to move his stack above starting.
