From 60 to Five -- The Quest for Deepstacks Gold is Heating Up

Una Kelly
Una Kelly

The 2024 World Series of Poker is in full swing, with cards in the air in no fewer than 12 (!) concurrent events today. One of these events is extra special for PokerNews: Event #62: $600 PokerNews Deepstack Championship, our first-ever sponsored bracelet event, has reached its penultimate day. Action will resume at 11 a.m. local time in the Horseshoe Event Center and it promises to be an exciting day.

One of the biggest fields of the summer — 5,110 — has already been whittled down to its final 60 hopefuls after two long days of play. Each of them has locked up at least $5,253 for their efforts — a near 9x return on investment — but the biggest slices of the $2,606,100 prize pool are still up for grabs, including the top prize of $282,876 and the coveted gold bracelet.

What's even better: as the inaugural PokerNews-sponsored bracelet event, PokerNews went the extra mile and will offer the winner a unique, commemorative 24k-karat gold coin as a testament to their accomplishment.

It's still anyone's game at the start of Day 3, with bracelet winner Kenny Hunyh (5,920,000) leading the pack. Other recognizable faces in the hunt include Darryll Fish (5,130,000), bracelet winner Chris Dombrowski (1,620,000), and Ray Henson (1,080,000). Unfortunately, none of the PokerNews Daily Deepstacks leaderboard qualifiers, who won a freeroll into this event for their accomplishments in the Daily's, could make their way to Day 3.

Day 3 will start in Level 28 with blinds at 50.000/100,000 and feature 60-minute levels throughout, with a 15-minute break after every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after the conclusion of the sixth level of the day (~5:30 p.m.). The plan is for play to continue until five players remain and then hard stop for the night.

On a Q54 flop, Jun Li checked to Rami Ilyasov who bet 250,000. Seated in the small blind, Li check-raised to 700,000 and Ilyasov called.

Li quickly went all in for 1,415,000 on the 8 turn and Ilyasov snapped him off.

Jun Li: 55
Rami Ilyasov: AQ

Ilyasov groaned after seeing Li tabling a set of fives. With his top pair being dead, he still had the clubs as outs but bricked the J river to be left with crumbs.

Four-Hand Penalty For Wright

Level 30 : Blinds 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante

Glen Wright raised to 450,000 in the cutoff and Scott Sommer defended the big blind. Sommer checked the KJ7 flop to Wright, who bet a quick 700,000. Sommer came along with the call.

On the 7 turn, Wright wasted no time sliding in a stack of chips worth 1.5 million. Sommer indicated he hadn't checked the action yet, keeping the decision on him, and the floor was called over.

After some deliberation, Sommer checked, Wright's bet stood, Sommer folded, and Wright received a four-hand penalty for acting out of turn.
