Drama Ensues as Nguyen Shows a Card in Nine Minute Hand
Vinh Nguyen limped under the gun before William Phillips raised to 2,800 from the cutoff. Nguyen responded with a limp-reraise to 6,000, and Phillips called.
On the 10♣9♣3♣ flop, Nguyen bet 5,500 and Phillips put in the call.
Drama then ensued after the 5♠ turn was dealt. Nguyen instantly jammed his remaining stack of 28,000 into the middle, sending Phillips into the tank.
As Phillips was thinking, Nguyen asked the table, "What's the penalty for showing my hand. What is it? I want to show one card."
The floor was called over to officiate the situation as Nguyen continued, "I need to know what the consequences are."
The floor just shook his head with no response as Nguyen showed the A♥.
Nguyen kept his mouth active as he added, "Are you drawing? Please don't draw. You know I don't have a set, you know I don't have a flush. I'll give you a $100 freeroll that I don't have a club in my hand. I don't want a club I don't have a club."
Phillips finally chimed in, "I'll be quicker to make my decision if you're quiet."
Nguyen obliged, and Phillips would then fold his hand before Nguyen tabled the Q♠ as he had just ace-queen high with no club.
In the post-mortem, Phillips lamented, "I had ace-king with the king of clubs, nice hand."
The floor made his return to inform Nguyen that he will be on a minimum of a one round penalty once play resumes.
