Varkonyi "Straddle" Turns into Preflop Fireworks

2002 Main Event Champ Robert Varkonyi jokingly put in a 400 blind raise from under the gun as a "straddle" and was three-bet to 1,200 by Paul Guilbeau from the hijack. Just behind him in the cutoff, Manuel Lopez made it 3,000 to go. Not to be outdone, Jonathan Snyder five-bet to 11,000 from the big blind.

"What have I started?" Varkonyi said as he folded.

Guilbeau quickly folded and Lopez said, "I don't think these are any good," as he open-folded pocket queens.

Snyder made no comment and slid his cards into the muck before collecting the pot.

Cabusas Chips Up Slightly

Paul Taylor made it 500 to go from middle position with Glen Cabusas calling from the small blind, and Daemon Richardson calling out of the big blind.

Everyone checked the 6♦2♠7♣ flop to see the 5♥ appear on the turn. Cabusas led out for 1,000, which only Richardson called.

Both players checked the 3♣ river and Cabusas revealed 8x6x for a pair of sixes to win the pot.

Shawn Partovi in the big blind, Ole Nygaard in middle position, and Emery Martindale in the hijack had gathered a humongous pot of 56,000 when they saw the Q♥3♥Q♣10♣ turn. All three checked to the 6♠ river, where Partovi bet 8,000.

Nygaard tossed in a call, and Martindale quickly followed suit.

Partovi stood up and triumphantly smashed his Q♠Q♦ on the table. His flopped quads sent the cards of Nygaard and Martindale to the muck.

"I almost folded preflop," Martindale claimed, stating he had pocket kings. The whole table agreed Nygaard could only have had aces as Partovi was awarded the giant pile of chips.

Constantino Artee had gotten his stack of 53,500 in before the flop and was at risk against Dennis Morrison.

Dennis Morrison: A♠A♣

Morrison left Artee drawing dead after the J♦Q♦4♦A♦ turn, and the meaningless Q♠ river completed the board.

Artee saw his Main Event dreams crushed in Level 1, while Morisson gleefully raked in the pot, which was worth about 550 big blinds.
