Day 2 of Event #56: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em is in the books, and Canadian pro Ari Engel has bagged one of the top stacks heading into Day 3 on Canada Day tomorrow. He ended the day with 977,000 chips and hopes to earn Canada's second bracelet of the series on his country's 150th birthday.

Hungary's Marton Czuczor leads the remaining 32 players with 1,352,00 chips, worth 112 big blinds going into Day 3 when blinds start at 6,000/12,000 with a 2,000 ante. Behind him in second is Argentina's Norberto Korn with 1,098,000 chips, followed by Venezuela's Donis Agnelli (980,000) in third, Canada's Ari Engel (977,000) in fourth, and United States' Simon Lam rounding off the top five with 785,000. Interestingly enough, the top five stacks are represented by five different countries, showing what a diverse community the poker world has become.

The entire tournament brought forth a total of 623 entries, paying out 94 spots. The eventually winner will earn a whopping $618,285, but most importantly the coveted gold WSOP bracelet. A min-cash was worth $7,414, and the remaining 32 players are guaranteed to pocket $14,183 when they begin Day 3.

The day began with 250 players and dwindled down to just 32 to end the night. The bubble burst just after the dinner break, and it was Steve Karp who was responsible for bringing 94 players into the money. Jeff Hakim was the eventual bubble boy after losing a flop with ace-king, up against Karp's queens. A king hit the river, but it also completed a straight for Karp so he was eliminated in 95th place.

Jack Salter was one of the early chip leaders but gave up half of his stack after attempting to bluff Juha Helppi before the dinner break. Helppi tank-called after about five minutes and his straight was good to double up, making him one of the chip leaers. Ari Engel also built up a stack and stayed consistent throughout the day. Engel made a hero call, and followed that with winning a big pot with queens against Jonathan Concepcion's pocket tens. He clearly kept up with the momentum, bagging heaps at the end of the night.

The field today was stacked, so there's certainly a large list of notable players that made it through to Day 3 including Dietrich Fast (672,000), Juha Helppi (658,000), Damian Salas (481,000), Ravi Raghavan (467,000), Mike Watson(445,000), Matt Stout (389,000), Barny Boatman (361,000), Pierre Neuville (320,000), Matt Affleck (304,000), Aditya Agarwal (201,000), Andy Spears (197,000), and Darren Rabinowitz (174,000).

Final Table Payouts:

Many big names made their way to Day 2, and a lot of them made the money but weren't able to go deep, including Ivan Luca (36th place - $14,183), Jack Salter (37th place - $12,147), Benjamin Heath (43rd place - $12,147), Matt Berkey (44th place - $12,147), Olivier Busquet (61st place - $9,466), Cate Hall (73rd place - $8,020), and Chris Hunichen (88th place - $7,626).

Only 94 players made the money, meaning a good chunk of the field hit the rail without cash in their pockets, including the likes of Jason Mercier, Ryan Laplante, Maria Ho, Federico Butteroni, Gerg Merson, Matt Salsberg, Paul Volpe, Jeff Gross, and Natasha Mercier.

Keep following along as PokerNews reports all of the action over the next two days on the way to crowning a winner in this event.

Be Friends, It's Canada Day!

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 600 ante
Ari Engel
Ari Engel

Canada is getting ready to celebrate its 150th birthday tomorrow, but that didn't stop a couple of Canadians going to battle. Ari Engel and Jean-Pascal Savard have met at the same table again, which is no stranger to them. They met at the final table a couple months ago in Montreal, Canada where Savard came out on top, capturing the $1,000,000 first-place prize.

Here at the WSOP in Las Vegas, they are both looking for that elusive gold bracelet that comes with winning one of these events. Engel raised it up to 13,500 from under the gun and Savard called on the button. The flop came {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and Engel led out for 15,000. Savard called and the turn was the {3-Hearts}. Engel checked this time and Savard bet 41,000. Engel called and the {3-Clubs} fell on the river.

Engel checked again and Savard thought for a couple minutes. He finally knuckled the table, as though to give up on the hand and Engel tabled {a-Spades}{7-Hearts}.

Jean-Pascal Savard

"Good check," Engel said to his fellow countryman. "How fast were you calling?" Savard replied as they both had a laugh.

Matt Affleck Goes Back-to-Back

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Matt Affleck
Matt Affleck

Matt Affleck raised to 13,000 from middle position and the big blind reraised to 36,500. Affleck called and the two players saw a flop of {9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. Both players checked to the {a-Clubs} turn and the big blind checked one more time. Affleck saw an opening and bet 35,000. His opponent folded and Affleck scooped the pot.

In the next hand, Affleck opened the pot again with a raise to 12,500. The big blind called and the flop was {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. The big blind checked and Affleck bet 20,000 which his opponent called right away. The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and his opponent checked again. Affleck bet 35,000 and got another fold from his opponent.

Minkin Gets Bumped by Boatman

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Kelly Minkin
Kelly Minkin

With about 30,000 in the pot already on a board reading {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, Barny Boatman checked from the big blind. Kelly Minkin was in the cutoff and bet 10,000. Boatman quickly check-raised to 55,000 and Minkin called.

The turn was the {5-Clubs} and Boatman checked. Minkin reached for chips and bet 55,500. Boatman instantly moved all in and Minkin counted out her stack before deciding to call.

Boatman tabled {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for a set of eights and Minkin rapped the table and said "nice hand" as she tabled {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, drawing dead to the {a-Diamonds} on the river.

Minkin was eliminated and Boatman stacked up a mountain of chips in back-to-back hands.

Help-pi!

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Juha Helppi
Juha Helppi

Andy Park limped in from the cutoff and Juha Helppi raised to 23,500 from the small blind. Claas Segebrecht was in the big blind and called for his last 18,500. Park went into the tank and took a sip of his coffee before deciding to call.

The flop came {k-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades} and Helppi decided to check. Park paused for a moment and bet 25,000. Helppi thought about his next move and decided to put in a check-raise to 50,000. Park grabbed his coffee again and took several slow sips before deciding to fold.

"Ace-queen of hearts one time?!" laughed Segebrecht as he tabled {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for him. Helppi tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Spades} for two pairs and he needed to hit one of the two remaining fours in the deck to survive. The turn was the {6-Spades} and the river was the {9-Spades}, sending Segebrecht to the rail.

Helppi now has a mountain of chips in front of him and appears to have the top stack for the moment.

Helppi Makes a Big Call Near the Bubble

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Juha Helppi
Juha Helppi

The money bubble is just two eliminations away, and a big pot was brewing on table 719 just before the dinner break.

With about 100,000 in the middle, on a board reading {q-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, Jack Salter checked from the big blind and Juha Helppi bet 52,000 from the cutoff. Salter paused for a minute before moving all in, having Helppi covered by a lot. Helppi had 226,000 total, and had a big decision to make with the money bubble looming.

Helppi went into the tank for several minutes, clearly agonized by the decision. A crowd started to form as players headed on a dinner break. Salter remained still the entire time until Helppi finally called.

Salter gave Helppi a thumbs up and rapped the table, showing {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for two pair eights and fives. Helppi tabled {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a straight to the eight and raked in the massive pot.

Salter asked, "If I made it 150,000 would you have folded?" Helppi replied, "It would've been much easier to fold if you made it 150,000."

The flop came {9-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and Zhao checked. Neuville bet 6,500 and Zhao check-raised to 17,500. Neuville asked how much and then put his glasses on and stood up to look at the board. He sat back down and called.

The turn was the {8-Hearts} and Zhao checked this time. Neuville paused for a moment and bet 17,000. Zhao called.

The river was the {6-Clubs} and both players checked. Zhao tabled {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for two pairs, nines and eights, but Neuville tabled {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for an ace-high flush and scooped the pot.

Babak Badkoubei raised to 6,000 from the hijack and Matt Affleck called from the cutoff. Steven Tabb was in the big blind and moved all in for 46,800. Badkoubei thought for about a minute but eventually folded. Affleck asked for a count and decided to call.

Tabb was at risk and ahead with {a-}{q-}, up against Affleck's {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

The flop came {10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and Affleck flopped a monster draw with outs to make a flush or a straight. The turn was the {7-Spades} to complete his straight, and the river was the {q-Clubs} to send Tabb to the rail.
