Richard Gryko is the Lucky One

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

Pot-Limit Omaha

Often in pot-limit Omaha, players make very strong hands, and players can miss big draws and make very weak hands. Something that rarely happens is a player taking a pot with no pair; even more rare is when a player takes the pot with no pair and anything less than ace or maybe king high.

Richard Gryko just won a hand with eight high and eliminated his opponent. His opponent almost couldn't believe it and was yelling to his friend to tell him what happened.

The board read {j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and, based on both players hands, they likely got all in on the flop, both holding straight draws.

Gryko: {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Opponent: {8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}

The turn {3-Diamonds} and the river {6-Spades} missed both draws and Gryko was left holding the winner with {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} as his highest possible hand. His opponent only had {8-Spades}{5-Clubs} and was out-kicked.

Cheong tabled {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Spades} and his opponent showed {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-}. The turn was the {j-Diamonds}, giving Cheong a straight and the river bricked out with a {2-Diamonds}. Cheong doubled up through his opponent.

Ray Henson Doubles Up

Level 3 : 75/150, 25 ante

No-Limit Hold'em

Ray Henson joined shortly after the first break of the day. He just doubled up when he three-bet shoved with {q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}.

His opponent called with {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} and then shrugged his shoulders as if he expected a queen to roll off on the {q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop. Henson stayed ahead and earned the double.

Henson is currently third in the WSOP Player of the Year race. He has four final tables this WSOP and is definitely capable of finishing an already strong summer with a bang and taking home the WSOP POY honors.

He is currently chasing John Racener who won his first bracelet this year among a record 14 total cashes. In second place is Chris Ferguson, who also has 14 cashes this summer.

The race should be a close one. We will keep you posted on how Henson fares here on Day 1 of Event #64.

No-Limit Hold'em

Moments after seeing Phil Laak take his seat after the first break of the day, Laak found himself with all of his chips in the middle preflop in a three-way pot. Laak turned over {a-}{k-} and was in trouble after seeing one of his opponents show the same hand {a-}{k-}, and the other tabling {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {10-}{5-}{4-}{7-}{6-} and his opponent with pocket nines had both players covered. He scooped the pot while scoring a double knockout, one of them being Laak.

No-Limit Hold'em

Matt Affleck raised to 400 from under the gun and was called by the cutoff and the button. The flop came {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{7-Clubs} and the action was checked around to the {3-Clubs} turn card.

Affleck checked, along with the cutoff, and the button bet 800. Affleck called and the cutoff folded leaving two players to see the river. The {10-Spades} fell on the river and both players checked. Affleck tabled {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} which was good enough to earn him the pot.
