"Matusow Blowup?!"

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

With about 9,000 in the pot already, on a board reading {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, Doug Polk checked from late position. Mike Matusow was in the hijack and bet 3,400. Polk thought for a moment and called.

The river was the {9-Clubs}, and Polk checked. Matusow quickly checked back, and Polk tabled {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for a flush. Matusow flashed his hand to Polk and quickly tossed his cards into the muck.

As Polk was raking in the pot, a player at the table behind shouted out, "Matusow blowup?!" The few players who overheard it had a chuckle, and Matusow calmly received his next hand.

Smurfit Cancels Kelly's Double

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

The board was already complete and showed {7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, and Matthew Kelly checked out of the big blind. There was 13,000 in the middle, and Alan Smurfit bet 15,000, which Kelly called after plenty of consideration.

"He called me?" Smurfit asked, and once that was confirmed by the dealer, he rolled over {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} for a full house.

"Wow, glad I folded," Chris Hunichen added.

"I wish that king didn't come," Kelly chimed in. He had previously doubled through Hunichen, but this pot sent him back to the stack he had a half hour ago.

Mortensen Keeps Climbing

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Morten Mortensen raised to 1,100 preflop from early position, and three players called. They all checked to the river with the board reading {6-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs}. After the big blind checked, Mortensen bet 7,500, and all of his opponents reluctantly laid their hands down.

On the next pass by the table, Mortensen was in the small blind and was heads-up with the big blind. The board read {k-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{8-Spades}, and Mortensen checked to his opponent, who bet 1,200. Mortensen check-raised to 5,100, and his opponent called. The river brought the {q-Hearts}, and Mortensen led out for 8,800. His opponent called, and Mortensen tabled {7-Spades}{6-Spades} for a flush to scoop another pot.

Yang Flops the Nuts and Doubles

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang

With about 7,600 already in the middle and the board reading {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, Jerry Yang was in the cutoff and heads-up against the player in the hijack, who bet 4,000. After brief consideration, Yang called, leaving himself with 9,375 behind.

The river brought the {Q-Clubs}, and Yang's opponent went into the tank for about 30 seconds before betting all-in effective. Yang called instantly and tabled {A-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for the flopped nut flush. His opponent mucked.

Trio Atop the Counts in Brasilia

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Ryan Hall and Sam Grafton have nearly identical stacks at the top of the counts in Brasilia, while Ronnie Brown is slowly but surely getting there himself. Meanwhile, Leon Tsoukernik has been eliminated after having been moved next to Richard Seymour not too long ago.

Cornell Won't Fold Kings

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

After an open to 1,500 and a call, the player in the hijack made it 5,200 to go. That wasn't enough for Tyler Cornell, who re-raised to 12,600 on the button. Action folded back to the player who three-bet, and he thought for about 30 seconds and then dropped in a stack of T5,000 chips to put Cornell at risk.

Cornell double-checked his holdings and then quickly called, tabling {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. His opponent had {a-Spades}{k-Spades}, and Cornell faded any bullets as {9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{7-Spades} rolled off the deck.

Filatov Remains Aggressive

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Anatoly Filatov is trying to make the most of his Day 1 in the Main Event by trying to run up as big a stack as possible. He has certainly been the most aggressive player at his table throughout the day, and he just played another hand to prove it.

Filatov lost some chips earlier, but after facing a raise to 1,000 from middle position and a call, Filatov three-bet to 3,400. Both of his opponents called, and the flop came {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. The action was checked to Filatov, who bet 2,700, and that got a fold from both opponents.
