Graham Feels Like A New Man

Savan Trivedi raises to 1,200 from early position and Graham Newman makes the call from the cut-off. They see a a {J-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {6-Clubs} flop where Trivedi check-calls a 2,100 bet before setting Newman in on the {10-Hearts} turn. The latter makes the call and finds his {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} in good shape against his opponent's {6-Hearts} {4-Clubs}. The river is the {A-Spades} and Newman doubles up his stack to around 13,000.

The Mouth on . . . Politics?

Deep thoughts... with Mike Matusow
Deep thoughts... with Mike Matusow
In one of those "Who would've thought?" moments, Mike Matusow is currently engaged in a heated political discussion at his table, primarily with fellow poker pro Robert Williamson III.

It was Williamson, however, who appeared the most passionate about the subject at hand:

"Biden sucks . . . He's old! He's almost as old as McCain!" Robert said. "That's the only one out of the four I don't like," he added.

Tournament Director Steve Frezer then chimed in, "I'm gonna give you guys a penalty if you continue to talk politics!"

Williamson fired back, "But we're trying to solve our country's problems!"

New Table of Death/Doom/Destruction

David Williams and Phil Laak just arrived on the main floor, coming from broken tables upstairs to take seats alongside everyone's favorite Irish monk, Andy Black.

And as my colleagues have noted, the Andy Black makeover really is quite remarkable. The perfectly tailored suit jacket... the studded Bulgari sunglasses... the clean shaven face. Well done, sir.

Jesper Hougaard's Stack Dented

The UTG player opened for 900 and from middle position, Jesper Hougaard put in a reraise to 3,000. Though his move was met with folds from the rest of the table, the UTG player shoved the rest of his stack into the middle, eliciting an agonized look from Hougaard. Ultimately he called the additional 6,125, and discovered his {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} was dominated by {A-Spades} {K-Spades}. No help for Hougaard on the {A-Clubs} {J-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {7-Hearts} board and Hougaard saw his once-mighty stack shrink to 10,300.

Yil Be Alright

Huseyin Yilmaz raises to 2,000 from early and only the other big stack of Thomas Marchese finds enough to call from the big blind before the flop comes {8-Spades} {K-Clubs} {9-Clubs}.

Marchese makes a casual looking check and Yilmaz does the same before the turn is dealt {7-Clubs} . Once again Marchese makes a casual limp wristed check but is met with 2,700 bet this time.

He makes the call and the final card comes {A-Hearts}. For the third time Marchese checks and Yilmaz checks too, not seemingly liking the ace.
We see why as he turns over {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} and he sees he was beat before the river as Marchese shows {K-Spades} {Q-Clubs} for the pot.

Marchese up to 39,000, Yilmaz down to 23,000.

Junglen Saved by the River

Adam Junglen
Adam Junglen
On a flop of {J-Spades} {9-Clubs} {3-Hearts}, the UTG player checked, Adam Junglen bet 1,200, and his opponent raised to 3,200. Junglen shoved all in and was met with an insta-call, his {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds} outflopped by {9-Spades} {9-Hearts}. The turn came the {K-Diamonds} but the {A-Clubs} spiked on the river, making Junglen's set and doubling him up to 14,500.

Waiting To Pounce...

Play has slowed right down on the remaining two tables on the upper floor of the Empire Casino. Beneath the glittering chandeliers, the aggression factor seems to have ebbed a bit, and many of the players look content to just wait for their table to break so they can find richer pickings elsewhere. This looks to be to the benefit of Savan Trivedi, the current chip leader, who has seemingly amassed every single green 25 denomination chip on his table.

Vanity, Thy Name is Phil

Author and makeup aficionado Phil Laak

And this time, I'm not talking about Hellmuth.

Another Phil, the one of the Laak variety was just spotted leafing through a copy of BLUFF-Europe... and reading his own article.

Laak penned a piece in this month's issue about pulling the wool over everyone's eyes at the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas this past summer when he showed up in a wig and latex makeup designed to completely conceal his appearance and make him appear like an old man.

Laak looked rather satisfied with his work as he read along.

A Timely Find

Michael O'Sullivan raised from early position and found Kenneth Gregersen reraising him out of the blinds. O'Sullivan quickly moved his remaining chips in, with Gregersen calling, showing {A-Spades} {K-Hearts} but finding himself needing one of three bullets if he was to kill off O'Sullivan's cowboys {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds}.

The board came out {2-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} but when the {4-Spades} came on the turn, O'Sullivan put his hands on his head wincing as if he knew what was coming next. But he was worrying in vain as instead the harmless {8-Clubs} came out instead boosting his stack up to 13,000 and knocking Gregersen back down to roughly 8,000.
