October Niner Doubles Through Monnette

Greg Merson
Greg Merson

Greg Merson and John Monnette have enjoyed quite a bit of success in 2012. Both won a bracelet this past summer in Vegas, both are in contention in the WSOP Player of the Year race (Merson currently leads), and both are still alive in today's tournament.

In a recent hand, Renaud Blangiardi opened for 1,250 from early position only to have Monnette three-bet to 3,050 from the cutoff. Merson then four-bet all in from the button, Blangiardi folded and Monnette made a hesitant call.

Showdown
Merson: {A-Spades}{9-Spades}
Monnette: {9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Monnette was unhappy to see that he shared a nine with Merson, and rightfully so as his chances of winning were slim. The {7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop was dry for Monnette, while the {A-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead. The meaningless {J-Diamonds} was put out on the river and Merson, who made the final table of the Main Event as is a member of the October Nine, received a double.
