Event #5: €10,450 Mixed Max - No-Limit Hold'em
Day 1 Started
Today, the sixth annual World Series of Poker Europe at the Casino Barrière in Cannes, France will continue with Event #5: €10,450 Mixed Max No-Limit Hold'em. The event, which was introduced to the WSOP Europe schedule last year, has proven popular with players because of its unique format—nine handed on Day 1; six handed on Day 2; and then heads-up for the final 16.
In 2011, this very event attracted 125 of the world’s best players and the top 16 ended up being quite the star-studded affair that included Bryn Kenney, Erik Seidel, Matt Waxman, Jason Mercier, Brian Hastings, Dan Fleyshman, Noah Schwartz, Roger Hairabedian, Shawn Buchanan and Michael Mizrachi. Interestingly, both Hairabedian and Mizrachi are at the Event #3: €5,300 Pot-Limit Omaha right now—Follow that action by clicking here.
In last year’s final match, Mizrachi squared off against Buchanan and emerged victorious to capture the €336,008 first-place prize and what was then his second bracelet (he captured his third in this year’s $50,000 Poker Players Championship and could win his fourth in the aforementioned PLO event here at the WSOP Europe).

Tournament Director Jack Effel just gave the tradition, "Shuffle up and deal," which means cards are in the air here in Event #5: €10,450 Mixed Max - No-Limit Hold'em. The plan is to take a one-hour dinner break after Level 4, and then return and play through Level 8.
Not all of these players have taken their seats at the start, but they've paid up and their stacks are getting blinded away if they're not present.

Tournament Director has informed the players that there is a chance this event, which was originally supposed to take place over four days, may be cut down to three based upon the field size. An official determination won't be made until registration closes in approximately five hours from now, but it's something to be aware of.
Players are slowly filling up the empty seats around the room and a few interesting tables have emerged:

Action folded to Brian Park in the cutoff and he put in a raise. Since the player on the button was gone, action was on Phil Ivey in the small blind. He opted to three-bet it to 800, the big blind folded, and Park responded with a four-bet to 1,950. Not to be outdone, Ivey put together an assortment of chips and knuckled out a five-bet of 5,950. Park must have realized he'd met his match as he thought for about 20 seconds and then released his hand.

It's horrible when you have to argue your own point when a ruling is made against you, knowing that arguing only highlights the weakness of your hand. Just ask Fung Cheung.
Jean Robert Bellande, Cheung and Juha Hellpi all took a flop. Bellande led for 650 from under the gun and Cheung threw out 1,125 meaning to call. Hellpi folded as the floor was called. She argued that she meant to call but was forced to min raise to 1,300 as her bet was more than 50% of Bellande's bet.
Bellande decided to pile on the pressure and three-bet to 2,600. Cheung called and then gave up on the turn after Bellande fired 4,500 into her.

The players continue to trickle into the tournament floor. Dan Smith, who brought some sushi with him, just took his seat over at Table 9, which includes his peers Justin Bonomo and Isaac Haxton.
Meanwhile, David "ODB" Baker took his seat at the same table as Phil Ivey and John Juanda sat down at Table 18 with Jason Mercier and Joe Kuther. Juanda wasn't sure he'd be able to play this event as it started at 5 p.m. and his one-year-old son, who is with him and his wife here in Cannes, has messed up his sleep schedule a bit. Nonetheless, Juanda tore himself away and is in the field.
