Five Poker Hall of Famers Among Those to Advance from Day 1c of Wynn Millions

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Poker Hall of Famers
Poker Hall of Famers

The highly-anticipated $10,000 buy-in, $10,000,000 GTD Wynn Millions continued on Sunday with the third and final starting flight. Day 1c 676 runners, which along with Day 1a’s 263 and 1b’s 389 brought the total field up to 1,328 entries.

That easily surpassed the seven-figure guarantee by creating a $12,483,200 prize pool. The top 134 finishers will get a piece of it with a min-cash being worth $25,091 while the eventual winner will walk away with a $2,018,866 first-place prize. They won’t be the only Wynn Millionaire though as the runner-up will receive $1,248,886.

After 10 levels of play, 246 players remained including five Poker Hall of Famers in John Hennigan (120,000), Jack McClelland (99,500), Daniel Negreanu (77,500), Erik Seidel (8,000), and Johnny Chan (36,500).

Among those to bag big stacks on Day 1c were Joseph Zona (347,000), Andrew Heckman (334,500), Orson Young (326,000), and Frank Funaro (313,000). They were joined by players like Matas Cimbolas (235,000), Anthony Zinno (169,000), Maria Konnikova (88,500), and Maria Ho (86,500).

Heckman got a big chunk of his chips in the penultimate level of the night when the player under the gun opened for 2,700 and found three callers, which included Heckman from the cutoff. The player in the big blind three-bet jammed. Only Heckman called and the two players tabled their hands.

Opponent: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Andrew Heckman: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

It was a classic race with Heckman looking to stay in the lead and he did after the {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} board ran out.

Among those to fall on Day 1c were Phil Laak, Nipun Java, Jean-Robert Bellande, Ben Keeline, Ben Farrell, Nick Rigby, and Chad Alberti, who had won his way into the tournament for $200 via the Wynn Steps satellites.

The surviving players from Day 1c will return Tuesday at Noon local time on Tuesday. In the meantime, Day 2ab will play out at Noon on Monday.

Here's a look at what awaits the final table on Day 6:

Craig Varnell open-jammed for 24,500 from early position and action folded around to the player in the small blind who called.

Craig Varnell: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Varnell was ahead with his made hand of nines and luckily for him, the {8-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{5-Spades} runout kept his tournament hopes alive.

Moreno Hits Every Out to Send Opponent Packing

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Andrew Moreno
Andrew Moreno

Action on the table quickly folded to the player in the cutoff who raised all in for 16,000 and Andrew Moreno called from the small blind.

Andrew Moreno: {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-}{9-}

Moreno was dominated but he had luck on his side as the flop fell {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades} giving him trips. Things got better for Moreno as the case {7-Clubs} dropped on the turn leaving his opponent drawing dead to the {8-Hearts} river.

Chad Alberti in for Just $200 Thanks to Wynn Steps Quailifiers

Level 6 : 300/300, 600 ante
Chad Alberti
Chad Alberti

Five figures to enter a poker tournament, like the $10,000 buy-in for the Wynn Millions, is a little too steep for a lot of players. That is why Ryan Beauregard and his crew at Wynn Poker made sure to offer step qualifiers to give every poker player a route to play the summer's most anticipated event.

Chad Alberti, a member of the rising Poker 4 Breakfast Facebook group, is the prime example of turning a small investment and parlaying it into a golden opportunity.

On June 21, he wrote: "Played the Wynn Millions step 1 satellite tonight, got me a seat to step 2 into the $1,100 satty and now have a chance at a $10k seat with a $10 million gtd, all off $200!"

Less than a week later, he did it again: "Wynn millions step sattys, got the first step out of the way the other day and tonight got the second step accomplished! I got a $10k seat off of only $200!! $10 million guarantee prizepool and I think they will shatter that with 3 starting flights. I'm going to play last flight on Sunday at 12pm ... [my] Hendon Mob isn't that great but I have been running deep in a lot of tournaments lately and have been playing well, thanks for all the support in advance!!"

Alberti is busy grinding here on Day 1c, and only time will tell if he's able to take the next step to a Wynn Millions payday!

An Orbit with Phil "Unabomber" Laak

Level 5 : 300/300, 500 ante
Phil Laak
Phil Laak

To say Phil "Unabomber" Laak is unique would be an understatement. Laak, who has been the longtime partner of actress Jennifer Tilly, made a name for himself on the World Poker Tour (WPT) during the height of the "Poker Boom." While Laak spends much of his time grinding cash, he couldn't resist the allure of the Wynn Millions and is in action today.

We decided to spend an entire orbit observing Laak, who started with 33,000 in chips.

Hand #1 (Cutoff): Action folded to Laak and he raised to 2,000, which was good enough to swipe the blinds and antes.

Hand #2 (Hijack): Laak limped, the players on the button and in the small blind did the same, and the big blind checked his option to bring about a flop of {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. Three checks saw the player on the button bet 1,000 and Laak called. Action then went check-check on the {k-Diamonds} turn.

When the {2-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Laak bet 3,100 and his opponent called. Laak tabled the {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for trip kings and it was good as his opponent mucked.

Hand #3 (Lojack): A player in early position raised and Laak folded.

Hand #4 (UTG+1): The UTG player folded and so did Laak.

Hand #5 (UTG): Laak limped and the player in the cutoff raised to 2,000. Laak called and it was heads-up to the {4-Spades}{2-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop, which both players checked. Laak then check-called a bet of 3,000 on the {6-Diamonds} turn before both players returned to checking on the {7-Hearts} river. The cutoff tabled the {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and it was good as Laak mucked.

Hand #6 (Big Blind): A player raised to 1,300 from early position and got a caller. The next player then three-bet to 5,300, which prompted Laak to fold when action reached him.

Hand #7 (Small Blind): After a raise and a reraise, Laak folded.

Hand #8 (Button): The player in the cutoff moved all in for around 10,000 and Laak folded.

Laak ended the orbit with 34,300, just slightly ahead of where he began.

Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Erik Seidel was short-stacked when he moved all in for 4,600 second to act, and two spots over Scott Anderson three-bet to 10,000. That cleared the field and Seidel discovered the bad news.

Erik Seidel: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Scott Anderson: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Seidel was looking for a high five but the dealer left him hanging as the board ran out {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}.

Rutledge is One Lucky Cowboy

Level 5 : 300/300, 500 ante
Joe Rutledge
Joe Rutledge

There was all in action preflop between Joe Rutledge from the lojack and Matthew Davis from the hijack with Davis at risk.

Joe Rutledge: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Matthew Davis: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

Davis woke-up with aces in a prime spot and was looking good to score a double until the {k-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Spades} flop hit the felt giving Rutledge a set of kings.

The {j-Hearts} turn was no help to Davis as he needed an ace to fall on the river to stay alive but it came the {5-Clubs} ending his tournament.
