Alex Goulder Wins 2014 partypoker WPT National Prague Main Event

Alex Goulder wins!

World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Simeon Naydenov was leading the final 19 players into the last day of the 2014 partypoker World Poker Tour National Prague €2,000 Main Event at the Corinthia Hotel in Prague. Within the first level of play, the field was reduced to only 14 after fast action at the tables, but it would take until 4 a.m. to crown a new champion in a grueling heads-up match that lasted 115 hands. Ultimately, it would be Alex Goulder that emerged victorious by defeating Niclas Adolfsson to claim the trophy, DNA Monster headphones, and the €105,000 first-place prize.

The day began when a short-stacked Vladimir Velikov finished in 19th after his {A-Clubs}{8-Spades} got cracked by {A-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, and Manuel Sanchez Morito followed next after running the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} into the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs} of Mathias Kürschner. Then, Koray Aldemir had a kicker problem with the {A-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} against Goulder's {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} and found no help on a board of {5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Not long after, Sergej Barbarez was all in with the {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} after a four-way flop of {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, but he couldn't improve anymore versus Zo Karim's {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}. The American then cracked the {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} of Oliver Heidel with the {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and jumped into the lead.

Artur Voskanyan's run came to an end in 14th place when his {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} was no good in a showdown against Goulder's flopped set, and the tournament director from Russia had to settle for a payday of €6,100. Vladimir Malak received the same payout after he could not hold up with the {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} against Karim's {A-Spades}{K-Spades} on a board of {2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Spades}{K-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Jean-Philippe Piquette was then sent to the rail in 12th place after being unable to improve with the {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts} versus {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}. Afterward, Sebastian Langrock sent Salvatore Pepi to the rail in 11th place when making a full house with the {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and cracking the {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} of the Italian. With that, the unofficial final table of 10 was set.

By then, Goulder was on fire and won a coin flip with the {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} against the {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} of Mathias Kürschner and also sent fellow German Jonathan Klüpfel to the rail in ninth place. Klüpfel got it in via a three-bet with the {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} on a {3-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} flop, and the Brit called with the {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and completed a flush with the {4-Clubs} on the turn. Goulder even made a straight flush thanks to the {9-Clubs} river and entered the official final table as massive chip leader with one-third of the chips in play.

Online poker legend Chris "Big Huni" Hunichen would be the first player to leave the final table after bluffing away half his stack and then running the {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts} into the {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} of Goulder and the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} of Adolfsson. WPT Cyprus champion Alexander Lakhov bowed out in seventh place after his {A-Spades}{9-Spades} was unable to improve against the {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} of Andy Seth. Then, start-of-the-day chip leader Naydenov busted in sixth place with the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}. Once again it was Seth who claimed the chips by completing a full house with the {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}.

Karim was a big stack early on Day 3, but he could never get anything going on the final table, eventually bowing out in fifth place after calling all in with the {K-Spades}{3-Spades} in a battle of the blinds against Goulder. The Brit flopped a jack with the {J-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and scored the knockout thanks to a four-card flush on the river. Seth then lost a coin flip with the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} for almost even stacks against Langrock's {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} on a board of {4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. The German experienced the same scenario with the {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} against the {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} of Adolfsson, and the heads-up stage was set after 142 hands on the final table.

Until that point, Goulder had never given up the lead under the supervision of the cameras and started the heads-up battle with a 2-1 advantage. Adolfsson was ground down and doubled up twice, the second time in spectacular fashion via a two-outer after getting it in on the {Q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades}{9-Clubs} turn. The Swede had {Q-Spades}{3-Spades} and Goulder had the {A-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} only to see the cruel {Q-Hearts} appear on the river. Goulder then dealt the final blow in a preflop all in by holding up with the {A-Spades}{8-Hearts} versus the {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts} after the board ran out {6-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

This marks the end of the PokerNews live coverage from King's Casino for WPT National Prague. Below you can find the official results of the eight-handed final table, and the full payouts from the event can be found here.

Niclas Adolfsson

In hand #257, Niclas Adolfsson was all in with {K-Hearts} {10-Hearts} and Alex Goulder looked him up with {A-Spades} {8-Hearts}. Neither player would hit anything on the {6-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {J-Hearts} board and Adolfsson was eliminated in 2nd place for a payday of €72,000. The heads-up match itself lasted 115 hands and it would be Alex Goulder who emerged victorious after dominating most of the day. A recap of today's action will be available within the hour.

Big Double for Goulder

Level 30 : 50,000/100,000, 15,000 ante

A few smaller pots later, hand #254 was reached and Alex Goulder three-bet shoved for 2,890,000 with {A-Diamonds} {6-Spades}. Niclas Adolfsson had raised to 360,000 and called all in with the superior stack and {K-Clubs} {J-Hearts}. The Swede picked up a gutshot on the {9-Spades} {10-Spades} {6-Diamonds} flop, but the {2-Spades} turn and the {3-Spades} river were two bricks for him. Goulder now has regained a commanding lead, but does that mean it will be over soon?

Goulder Gets Two-Outered

Level 30 : 50,000/10,000, 15,000 ante

Alex Goulder raised to 200,000 and then called the three-bet of Niclas Adolfsson for 445,000. On thre {Q-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {2-Spades} flop, Adolfsson bet 500,000 and Goulder called before the Swede moved all in for 2,340,000 on the {9-Clubs} turn. Goulder snap-called with {A-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} for flopped trips and Adolfsson had two outs left with {Q-Spades} {3-Spades}. Sure enough the {Q-Hearts} fell on the river and left the Brit crippled.
