2020 WSOP Performance of the Week: Seth "AbeFroman" Fischer Ladders Way to Victory

The 2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) online bracelet events began at the beginning of July and will run through September 6th. It is comprised of 85 WSOP gold bracelets on the digital felt across two different clients: WSOP.com and GG Poker.

Each week, we’ll highlight those players who rise to the top through their performance, be it a dominating one in a single event, or an exhibition of consistency over several tournaments. Here’s a look at the POTWs thus far:

“AbeFroman” is Poker King of Event 56

When the final table of the 2020 WSOP Event #56: $1,500 GGMasters WSOP Edition [High Roller] – a tournament that drew 2,153 players and offered a $3,068,025 prize pool – got underway, Seth “AbeFroman” Fischer sat as the second-shortest stack. For those wondering, his screen name hails from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and the "Sausage King of Chicago."

The short-stacked Yonatan “malakasos” Basin quickly bowed out in ninth place, and that left Fischer as the low man on the totem pole. It looked as if Fischer was destined to exit in eighth place for $45,386, then he started to ladder up.

One-by-one players started to hit the rail and Fischer, still the short stack, began to earn more money. He sat back and watched as Clement “Sea View” Tripodi (8th - $45,386), Lukas “VapeNation” Parednis (7th - $63,124), Dominykas “MickeyMouse” Mikolaitis (6th - $87,793), Evaldas “Man14c” Aniulis (5th - $122,102), and Michael “MrFabulous” Nugent (4th - $169,821) all bowed out. Fischer seemed to ship a double between each elimination, which kept him afloat.

With three players remaining and $236,188 in prize money locked up, Fischer began to spin. In Level 27 (80,000/160,000/16,000), Arsenii "kastaban" Karmatckii raised to 320,000 from the button and Fischer three-bet shoved from the small blind for 3,083,072. Sebastien Grax four-bet shoved for 5,846,144 and Karmatckii folded what turned out to be ace-queen.

The 4♠9♣10♥ flop gave Fischer the lead with a pair of tens, but it was short-lived as the A♠ peeled off on the turn to give Grax a pair of aces. Fischer was drawing to just two outs, and amazingly he hit one when the 10♦ spiked on the river.

Even after that double, Fischer was still the short stack, but he kept the pressure on and before too long claimed the chip lead for the first time. Karmatchkii then doubled through Grax, who was left short and busted in third.

Fischer began heads-up play with 13.4 million to Karmatchkii’s 8.1 million and it didn’t take long for him to whittle down his opponent and close things out. In the final hand of the tournament, Fischer shoved the button with king-seven and Karmatckii called off for eight bigs with jack-ten. The board ran out clean and just like that Fischer climbed the ladder to a bracelet and $444,869 in prize money.

Alek “astazz” Stasiak Becomes First Double Winner

Back at the end of July, Canada’s Alek “astazz” Stasiak topped a 2,323-entry field to win the 2020 WSOP GGPoker Event #33: $1,111 Every 1 for Covid Relief (Caesar’s Cares) for $343,204 and his first gold bracelet. The tournament also raised over $350,000 for charity.

Fast forward to Event #52: $1,000 NLH, a tournament that attracted 2,006 runners and offered up a $1,905,700 prize pool. Stasiak was at it again by finishing as the last player standing to win a $273,505 top prize and a WSOP Europe package valued at $12,000. He also became the first player to capture two bracelets during the 2020 WSOP.
