On Day 1a of the World Poker Tour (WPT) $3,500 buy-in, $2 million GTD WPT Cyprus Championship at the Chamada Prestige Hotel & Casino, an interesting hand took place involving popular Brazilian vlogger and WPT Global Ambassador Romulo Dorea.

For those who may not be familiar with Dorea, he was a featured guest on Life Outside Poker hosted by Connor Richards:

The Hand

According to the WPT Live Updates, the hand occurred in Level 4 (300/500/500) at Table 16 when action exploded preflop and resulted in Chiboub Abdelmajid getting all in for 22,000 under the gun, Ingles Garcia for 19,500 from the hijack, Andreas Christodolou for 15,000 from the button, and Dorea having them all covered out of the big blind.

Chiboub Abdelmajid: AK
Ingles Garcia: QQ
Andreas Christodolou: 1010
Romulo Dorea: JJ

According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Dorea had a 16.96% chance of winning the hand, but that was cut in half to 8.54% after the flop came down a lackluster 972.

The K turn actually gave Abdelmajid the lead with a pair of kings, and Dorea was looking for one of the two remaining jacks on the river to win it all, which any poker player will tell you only has a 5% chance of happening.

Well, this was one of those times as the J spiked to give the Brazilian superstar a rare triple knockout. The card propelled Dorea up to 167,000, which was a 278 bb stack at the time.

PokerNews actually caught up with Dorea at the end of the day to discuss the hand.

"That was actually a no-brainer because of the way it was played," Dorea explained. "The guy slow-played the queens. Someone open-raised from under the gun, the guy called, another guy calls, and a guy who was short went all in. Me, with jacks, I’m crushing his range, I’m going to call, so I call for 17,000. Then a guy went all in for 24,000, the other guy went all in for 27,000, and I had to call like 10,000 more with jacks."

He continued: "I had a good feeling about jacks, to be honest, jacks is my favorite hand … It helped me a lot throughout the day because I had more space to make plays and build my stack."

Dorea went on to bag 228,000, the seventh-largest stack among the 127 players to survive Day 1a. Click here to check out the Day 1a recap on PokerNews.

In another big hand captured by PokerNews, Dorea hit another river to win a nice pot.

The WPT Cyprus Championship runs August 13-18. PokerNews is on-site to offer content, social media, and interviews.
