The Complete Poker Workout

Back on Dec. 5, a new poker book hit the market – The Complete Poker Workout by Jonathan Little.

In the book, published by D+B Publishing, Little has created 100 carefully thought-out hands to work through, where the reader will literally quiz themselves on every aspect of tournament play: preflop ranges, postflop strategy, adjustments based on your opponents’ tendencies, bubble play, final table play, and much more.

Not only does the book clarify areas of the game where your understanding is strong, perhaps more importantly, but it will also help identify your weaknesses and what you need to work on to improve your poker skills.

The book, which comes in at 392 pages, retails for $34.95 (though you can find it for $24.95 right now here) and is available in both paperback and ebook formats, as well as an audiobook version on Audible for $13.96.

Here is how the book is described:

You probably play a lot of poker tournaments — but how well do you really understand the game?

Most players think they’re doing fine. And maybe they are. But it’s incredibly hard to be objective about your own performance — especially under pressure, with money on the line. We all have blind spots: concepts we think we’ve mastered, but haven’t. These gaps can quietly sabotage your progress.

The Complete Poker Workout is designed to expose and fix those blind spots. In this hands-on guide, acclaimed player, coach, and author Jonathan Little puts your tournament skills to the test — covering preflop ranges, postflop decisions, opponent profiling, stack depth dynamics, and much more.

The Complete Poker Workout presents 100 carefully constructed hands, incorporating 392 targeted questions, all grouped by stack size. This structured approach helps you identify where your understanding is strong — and, more importantly, where it needs improvement.

Review of The Complete Poker Workout

I’ve been a longtime fan of Jonathan Little. His trio of Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker books helped improve my game, and in 2015, I was honored to be a contributor to his book, Jonathan Little’s Excelling at No-Limit Hold’em. In addition, I worked with Little for years, publishing strategy articles here on PokerNews, and to this day we collaborate on writing our respective nationally-syndicated poker columns.

As such, I was eager to check out his new book, The Complete Poker Workout. I hadn’t played a ton of poker in recent years, so admittedly, my game was a bit rusty. For me, this was the perfect opportunity to quiz myself and see if I still had some poker chops.

They say there is no substitute for the experience of actually playing poker, but The Complete Poker Workout comes close. That’s because Little designed the book to give readers a poker-playing experience by constructing interesting hands filled with multiple decision points, and then he offers detailed feedback.

The hand scenarios encompass a wide range, including ‘Value Betting the River,’ ‘Turning Trips on a Coordinated Board,' and ‘Getting Full Value Against a Weak Range,’ just to name a few. There are literally 97 more!

The book is also structured so that you can go at your own pace. For me, I took my time by completing two hands a day, which became a bit of a game – not unlike doing my daily Wordle – and allowed me to really absorb the lesson of each hand.

Whether you’re either a new or recreational player looking to elevate your game, or a seasoned player just looking to keep your skills sharp, The Complete Poker Workout offers something for all levels of players.
