Day 1c Completed
Defending champion Josep Valls used a last-second triple up to become one of the 47 players to advance from Day 1c of the 888poker Live Barcelona Main Event.
Valls was all in for his last 70,500 as Bernat Carreras and Panagiotis Mavritsakis both called to put him at risk. Valls ended up flopping top two pair to beat Mavritsakis’ pocket tens and secure the pot, bagging up 246,500 as he tries to go back-to-back in this event.
The third starting flight promised to be the biggest one yet, and it didn’t disappoint. A crowded field of 204 players packed Casino Barcelona today, far more than the first two days combined. Juan Velasco ended up as chip leader with 485,500, followed by Angel Blanco (441,500), Mauro Panto (387,000), and Alfredo Garcia (375,000). Edgar Bermejo earned a massive double up when he made a full house against Sean Neely after both flopped trips on his way to bagging 373,500 and rounding out the top five.

Gabi Livshitz was cruising along as a top stack until he faced a massive shove on the river from Filippos Avramidis. Livshitz tanked for nearly five minutes before folding, saying he was considering calling with just ace-high. Avramidis told him after the day he had ace-jack and Livshitz would’ve won the pot if he had made the hero-call. “I'm saving my good luck for Vegas this summer,” Livshitz said after he ended the night with 121,500, while Avramidis bagged 345,000.
Among those to fall on Day 1c included 888poker Ambassador Ian Simpson, Jack Hardcastle, David Algarra, and Marius Gicovanu. They still have tomorrow’s Day 1d turbo flight if they want to take a shot at the title, while late registration remains open until the start of Day 2 at 5 p.m. tomorrow.
The 204 entries today brought the field up to 365 through the first three days, with 81 already securing their spots on Day 2. There is still the possibility the field can grow much larger by the time the prize pool is confirmed at the start of Day 2. The action picks up on Level 15 with blinds of 2,500/5,000 and a 5,000 big blind ante.
PokerNews will be back tomorrow following all the action as the field plays down past the money bubble and towards the final table.
Day 1c has ended with 47 players remaining out of 204 entries.
Stay tuned for full chip counts and a recap of the day's action.
Josep Valls raised to 10,000 under the gun and received three callers before Panagiotis Mavritsakis three-bet to 56,000 in the big blind. Valls then moved all in for 70,500 and Bernat Carreras called on the button, as did Mavritsakis.
The flop came Q♦4♣J♣ and Mavritsakis bet 45,000, chasing away Carreras. "I made it easy on you," Mavritsakis told Valls as they turned over their cards.
Josep Valls: Q♥J♥
Panagiotis Mavritsakis: 10♠10♥
Valls had flopped top two pair to take the lead and the board ran out 4♦3♣ to earn the defending champion a late-night triple up.
Gabi Livshitz raised to 10,000 under the gun, Gabriel Podovei moved all in for 80,000 in the hijack, and Livshitz snap-called.
Gabriel Podovei: A♣9♣
Gabi Livshitz: A♠K♥
Podovei was dominated going to the J♠10♦2♠ flop. The 8♦ turn gave him some hope with a straight draw, and he hit his straight on the 7♠ river as he let out a big fist pump to celebrate his fortunate double up.
Tournament officials announced that players will see six more hands before bagging up for the night.
Ian Simpson moved all in for 28,500 from middle position, Marcos Thielke reraised to 75,000 on the button, and the rest of the table got out of the way.
Ian Simpson: 10♣10♦
Marcos Thielke: J♥J♣
"I feel good about this," Simpson said as he was dominated by Thielke's jacks, but he found no help on the 5♣2♥4♦5♥8♠ board and was sent to the rail in the closing moments of the day.
Alexander Sokolovsky raised to 10,000 in early position, Panagiotis Mavritsakis three-bet to 28,000 in the cutoff, and Sokolovsky called.
The flop came Q♦5♥4♠ and Mavritsakis continued for 23,000. Sokolovsky then raised to 52,000 and Mavritsakis called.
Both players checked the 6♠ turn. Sokolovsky also checked the Q♥ river before Mavritsakis bet 92,000.
Sokolovsky spent several minutes in the tank but eventually folded as Mavritsakis took the pot.
Marcos Thielke raised to 11,000 in the cutoff and Pau Veciana three-bet to 24,000 on the button. Thielke then four-bet to 71,000.
Veciana came back with an all-in shove for 260,000 and Thielke tanked for a few minutes before folding.
At another table, a player on the button got his last 25,000 in the middle and was up against Abel Aspas in the hijack.
All-In Player: A♥J♠
Abel Aspas: Q♦6♦
Aspas took the lead on the 9♠K♣Q♣ flop with a pair of queens, while the at-risk player picked up a straight draw. The turn was the 7♠, while Aspas stayed in front on the K♠ river to send his opponent to the rail.
