Every January, players from all across Europe gather in the majestic Spanish capital and the luxurious Casino Gran Via to take their shot at the 888poker Live Madrid Main Event title.

This year is proving to be no exception, as an international field made their way through the opening flight yesterday. Now it’s the turn of a new crop of hopefuls when Day 1b begins at 3 p.m. local time.

The first starting flight drew 56 total entries, with 20 players already securing their spots for Day 2. Shahrokh Morshedian bagged the chip lead with 331,000, while Jorge Ufano (286,000), Filippo Ragone (241,000), Axel Lopez (191,000), and Borja Diaz (177,000) round out the top five. Ian Simpson was the only member of the 888poker team to join the field yesterday, and he made it through with 85,000 in defense of the title he won here a year ago.
