Day 1b Completed

Mikel Gurrea Bags the Overall Chip Lead Heading Into Day 2

Level 9 : Blinds 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

It was an exceptionally busy day at the Casino Gran Madrid for Day 1b of the €1,100 888poker Live Madrid 20th Anniversary Edition. There were a total of 204 entries recorded over the course of nine levels and only 133 players bagged chips to advance forward to Day 2.

Leading the way was Mikel Gurrea who bagged an impressive 420,000 chips, good enough for the overall lead when the players return to the felt for Day 2. Gurrea is a regular on the Spanish poker circuit but rarely travels outside of the area when it comes to playing cards. Not far behind Gurrea was Martin Alcaide (331,500) who will join Gurrea at the top of the leaderboard when the action resumes.

It was also a big day for the 888poker team as a number of players found a way to put chips into a bag at the end of the night. Leading the charge is Caue Moura who had a rollercoaster of a day but managed to finish on an upswing with 216,500 chips. He will be joined by professional boxer Chris Eubank Jr (158,000), Jack Dean (98,500), Alexandre Mantovani (80,500), Ian Simpson (66,500), Ricardo Mateus (64,500), and Josh Manley (50,500) all of who advanced on just one bullet.

It wasn't as fortunate for the women on the team as Kara Scott, Vivian Saliba, and the newly announced member Lucia Navarro Martinez all busted out in the latter stages of the day. All three players are expected to make a return to the felt tomorrow with late registration still open for a good portion of Day 2. It was still a special moment for Navarro Martinez as she was joined by her fellow team members to congratulate her on joining the group and she was given the privilege of announcing the infamous "Shuffle up and deal" at the first break of the day.

The action is slated to resume at 4 p.m. local time on Wednesday with the blinds resuming at 1,000/2,000 and a 2,000 big blind ante. The levels will remain at 45 minutes throughout the day with late registration open until the end of level 13. The number of levels to be played is still up in the air as the tournament staff will be looking to dwindle the field down as much as possible.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the live updates throughout the day as players look to reach the money and position themselves for a final table appearance.

Last Three Hands of the Night

Level 9 : Blinds 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

The tournament clock has been paused with 10 minutes remaining in the last level of the night. Each table will play three more hands before the players bag up their chips and return at 4 p.m. local time tomorrow for Day 2. A full recap along with chip counts will be posted shortly.

Manley Gets Paid by Borsos

Level 9 : Blinds 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

A completed board of {k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} was spread across the felt and Csaba Borsos had a bet of 20,000 sitting in front of him from the big blind. Josh Manley shipped all in for around 40,000 which made Borsos a little skeptical.

After a minute had passed, Borsos eventually made the call and Manley showed him the goods with {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} for a full house. Borsos could only muster trip eights with {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and sent a chunk of his stack across the table.

Huge Double-Up for Cortes

Level 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Gerard Cortes

Three players went to a flop for 8,000 apiece and the dealer fanned the {j-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} across the board. Gerard Cortes led out with a bet of 5,400 and the button raised to 15,000. The action was back on Cortes who jammed all in for 70,800. His opponent asked for a count and then called to put Cortes at risk.

Gerard Cortes: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}

It was looking promising for Cortes who flopped a set of threes but the {j-Clubs} on the turn made things interesting. However, the {8-Diamonds} on the river was a brick and Cortes breathed a sigh of relief.

"It's more fun this way," Ian Simpson laughed on his left.

Romero Still Surging Ahead

Level 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

There was a raise to 2,400 from under the gun and Alex Romero flat-called from the cutoff. The rest of the table folded and they went heads-up to a flop of {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}.

Both players checked through to the {k-Diamonds} on the turn and the {10-Spades} on the river. Romero finally announced a bet of 8,000 on the river and his opponent looked him up. Romero tabled {q-Spades}{j-Spades} for a rivered straight and raked in another pot.

Franco Finds the Dream Scenario

Level 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

David Lappin raised to 2,500 from under the gun and Miguel Franco three-bet to 7,500 in the hijack. The small blind four-bet shoved all in for 64,600 which put Lappin in the tank for a minute before relinquishing his cards. Franco snap-called and the cards were on their backs.

Small Blind: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Miguel Franco: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

It was a great sight for Franco who had his opponent drawing extremely thin. The board ran out {8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} and Franco's aces held on to eliminate his opponent and vault him near the top of the leaderboard.
