Day 1a Completed

ANZPT Auckland Day 1a Chip Leader, Angie Fitzgerald
ANZPT Auckland Day 1a Chip Leader, Angie Fitzgerald

In the early hours of the morning, Day 1a of the PokerStars.net Australia New Zealand Poker Tour Auckland Main Event has come to an end.

SKYCITY Auckland Casino had 66 players take their seats for a relatively small Day 1a field. The three players who ended the recent ANZPT Melbourne Main Event on the podium, champion Paul Hockin, and runners-up Michael Guzzardi and Ashley Warner were all in today’s field, and will all progress to Day 2. Others to make it through include Cole Swannack, Graeme Putt and Ivan Zalac.

Some of the players who weren’t so fortunate include Leo Boxell, Liam O’Rourke, Jesse McKenzie, Jackson Zheng and Brooke Howard-Smith.

When all the chips were finally bagged and tagged, it was online qualifier and local resident Angie Fitzgerald amassing the most chips on the day with an impressive 113,500-chip stack to lead the 26-strong field into Day 2. Snapping on her heels, but unable to finish in the six-figure club are Guzzardi (98,000), Slav Sheynin (89,200) and Yu Xiang (78,200) while notables ANZPT Melbourne Main Event Champion Hockin (63,000), local veteran Putt (62,600) and Swannack (71,200) all had great finishes to their days and all remain in contention amongst a field mixed of locals, amateurs and online qualifiers.

Day 1b is set to kick off later today at 6:30 p.m NZST with approximately 42 online qualifiers already registered, and if a few more can make their way down to the SKYCITY Auckland Casino, then the first ever PokerStars.net ANZPT Auckland will be one to remember. Two More Hands

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The tournament Director has just announced that the players will play two more hands, before finishing up for the day.

At the moment it looks like Angie Fitzgerald will be the commanding chip leader, while we will have the official end-of-day chip counts and a wrap of the days action posted shortly.

Guzzardi Dropping

We ran over to the table to see the player in the cut-off bet out 2,500. Michael Guzzardi in the small blind opted to re-raise, making it 6,000. The original raiser then announced all-in, and pushed his last 20,100 into the middle. Guzzardi made the call, and the cards were shown.

Guzzardi: {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, to see Guzzardi drop to just over 100,000 in chips.

Putt Wins One off Fitzgerald

Action started with Angie Fitzgerald opening the pot with a bet of 3,500 from under-the-gun. It folded all the way back around to Graeme Putt in the big blind, who made the call. Both players saw the flop drop {10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, and checked their options. When the turn came the {8-Clubs}, Putt bet out 4,000 in chips, which forced a fold from Fitzgerald.

“First bluff of the day!” joked Putt, tabling {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

“Nice hand! I bluffed a minute ago,” responded Fitzgerald, who didn’t mind giving away a few of her chips.

Fitzgerald is cruising along on her table, sitting nicely atop the leader board with 158,000 in chips.

Sheynin Loses a Bigger Pot

No sooner did we write about Slav Sheynin giving away a few chips to his opponent, did he end up losing a big pot. We didn’t catch the pre-flop action, but both Sheynin and his opponent got their chips into the middle. His opponent had pocket aces and around 35,000 in chips invested, and was in great shape when he saw that Sheynin made the call holding pocket sevens.

The board couldn’t improve Sheynin as he dropped down to 52,000 in chips.

Sheynin Loses Pot, Still Close Behind

Over in the corner table of the room, action folded around to Slav Sheynin on the button, who made it 2,000. The player in the big blind called, and both players saw the flop come out {9-Spades}{Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. Sheynin’s opponent then check-called a bet of 1,500 before the {K-Hearts} fell on turn. Again the player in the big blind checked his option, and watched as Sheynin led out for another 4,000 in chips. This time he opted to re-raise, making it 9,000. Sheynin didn’t look very impressed, showing his {K-Clubs}, and mucking his hand.

Even with that loss, Sheynin is sitting on 87,000 in chips.

Swannack Takes Some from Fitzgerald

Angie Fitzgerald is keeping busy in the final levels of the day, recently regaining the chip lead she held for most of the day. She gave some of them back to Cole Swannack, however, and only holds a slight lead over Michael Guzzardi.

We caught the action on flop with the board reading {10-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, with a player in the big blind checking his option. Swannack then lead out for 3,600 and was instantly called by Fitzgerald. The big blind folded, and both players then saw the {5-Spades} fall on the turn. This time Swannack thought for a moment, before counting out 7,400 in chips, and placed them in the middle. Fitzgerald counted out a call, and left it sitting beside her stack, before eventually giving up the hand, and mucking her cards into the middle.
