Three recent hands have all ended with J.C. Tran on the wrong side of the fence, lowering his chip count all the way to 10,000. First, he called a bet of 2,700 from Ivan Tan on the turn of a board showing . The river was the , bringing a quick check from both players. Tan showed to take down the pot.
The two tangled again when Tan raised to 1,300 preflop and Tran called. Tan checked the flop to Tran, who took a stab at the pot by firing out a bet of 2,000. Tan check-raised him to 7,000 (a sign, perhaps?), inducing a quick fold.
In the third and final hand, Tran was the preflop aggressor with a raise to 1,300. His nemesis this time was Mike "Timex" McDonald, who made the call in late position. The flop was . Tran fired out a pot-sized continuation bet that McDonald called. He fired again for 5,000 when the turn fell , and again McDonald called. The river was the , bringing a quick check from each player.
"I missed," said Tran. McDonald showed for two pair, aces and kings, and a winning hand.
Julian Powell opened with a raise to 1,100 from the cutoff and Joe Hachem bumped it up to 3,500 from the button. The blinds folded and Powell went into the tank before folding face up!
Powell has been battling the short stack for most of the day but didn't want to risk trying to double up through the champ! Powell is on 12,100 with Hachem more comfortable on 26,000.
David Chiu was on the short stack and pocket eights looked like a great hand to move all in with, however he ran into the pocket kings of Steven Silverman.
The board of didn't provide any miracles for Chiu and he was eliminated from today's field.
Even with the stacks still fairly deep, some players are happy to take a flip for a large number of chips. Ivan Tan opened a pot with a raise. Action folded around to Chong Wing Cheong in the big blind, who reraised. Tan didn't have any problem sending the rest of his chips across the betting line, and Cheong didn't have any problem calling.
Tan:
Cheong:
"Small cards, small cards!" pleaded Tan with the dealer. "Two-three-six!" He didn't get his wish, as the flop came down . Cheong could take the lead with any of the remaining aces, kings or queens. The on the turn didn't improve his hand, nor did the on the river.
Tan doubled up to 61,300 while Cheong, who had a large stack early, has slipped back to the back of the counts with 14,500.
Fortune continues to smile upon Charles Chua. He went all in on the turn of a board reading against Andrew Pantling. Pantling tabled , but was drawing dead against Chua's full house. The hand allowed Chua to climb up to 23,000 and sent Pantling plummeting to 18,000.
Xuan Nguyen has taken out another opponent. All the chips were in preflop with his short-stacked opponent moving in with and Nguyen making the call with .
The board fell to ship the pot to Nguyen as he moves up to over 55,000.
