...And Gill Chips Down

Carter Gill
Carter Gill
Carter Gill's tournament has started off completely opposite from Steve Sung's. He has lost several pots in the first half hour, including a recent pot where he raised a lone opponent from 100 to 450 on a flop of {9-Spades} {6-Clubs} {2-Clubs}. Gill's opponent called.

Both players checked the {6-Diamonds} turn. When the river fell {J-Diamonds}, Gill's opponent bet 500. Gill called, then mucked when he was shown {J-Clubs} {7-Clubs} for a rivered top pair. After that hand his stack moved down to 6,300.

Sung Chips Up...

It's always nice to start a tournament off with an early win. After an early-position player min-raised to 100 and was called in two places, Steve Sung made it 600 to go from the button. Only one player called, and he folded after Sung bet 800 on a flop of {A-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}. Winning a few other pots has allowed Sung to chip up to 12,500 in the early going.

Hachem Doubles with Third Nuts

Joe Hachem calling out "Shuffle up and deal!" earlier today.
Joe Hachem calling out "Shuffle up and deal!" earlier today.
Joe Hachem has found an early double-up. With the board showing {8-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds}, Hachem bet 800. His opponent shoved all in from the button. Hachem made a quick call and tabled {J-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}, the third nuts. He was up against a set of aces when the button turned over {A-Hearts} {A-Clubs} and needed to dodge a board pair. He did so when the river came {3-Hearts}.

Hachem now has 21,000 in chips.

The Hottest Player on Tour

John "The Razor" Phan
John "The Razor" Phan
Undoubtedly the hottest player on the poker tour right now is John "The Razor" Phan.

How this for a 2008 record...

- Four WPT cashes.
- Two WPT final tables.
- One WPT Title, won three weeks ago at the 2008 Legends of Poker event worth over $1million.
- Five WSOP cashes.
- Two WSOP bracelets, worth over $500,000.

It's been an unbelievable year for Phan, and we welcome him here today as he looks to add an APPT title to that impressive record.

Who's Here?

Today's field is much larger than the previous two days and is full of world class players including Joe Hachem, Lee Nelson, Hevad Khan, John Phan, Quinn Do, Shaun Deeb, Tony Hachem, David Chiu, J.C. Tran, runner-up in the 2008 APT Macau event last week Joon Hee Yeah, and the 2007 APPT Macau Main Event Champion, Dinh Le.

Biggest Tournament Ever in Asia

Tournament staff have announced that the field today already consists of approximately 210 players, with late registration still open. That makes the combined field of all Day 1s a total of 520 players and counting, with a prize pool in excess of $1,500,000. Both numbers are records for a poker tournament in Asia.

Opening Ceremony

The players were once again welcomed with a traditional Chinese lion ceremony to scare away the evil spirits and bad beats! PokerStars pros Lee Nelson and Hevad Khan assisted on the drums and cymbals before 2005 World Champion Joe Hachem uttered the immortal words "Shuffle Up and Deal!"

The cards are now in the air!

Here We Go Again

Players will be hoping to amass a mountain of chips.
Players will be hoping to amass a mountain of chips.
It's 1pm local time at the Grand Waldo Hotel and Casino in beautiful Macau. Preparations are once again underway to start a new flight of players for Day 1c of the 2008 PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event. The tournament staff have just pulled out rack after rack of green, purple, and blue tournament chips and are beginning to set them out in front of the seats at each table. We have been told to expect upwards of 200 players in today's field. If that occurs, then combined with the 125 players who started on Day 1a and the 184 who started on Day 1b, this tournament would be the largest tournament ever played in Asia, both in terms of number of players and size of the prize pool.

As always, PokerNews will be bringing you updates live from the tournament floor as the action occurs. Join us at 1:30pm local time to follow along!
