Terrence Chan Eliminated

Terrence Chan Eliminated
Terrence Chan Eliminated
Terrence Chan has been eliminated after holding {7-Clubs}{8-Spades} for a pair and straight draw on a flop of {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} against Daisy Wain's open-ended straight draw with {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}.

Wain picked up additional outs on the turn with the {9-Diamonds} and the {Q-Spades} delivered her the straight as Terrence becomes the second Chan to be eliminated today.

A Lesson From The Master

"The Master" during Day 1 action
"The Master" during Day 1 action
We caught the action on the turn with the board reading {2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades}. Men "The Master" Nguyen fired out a bet of 5,000 and Rodney Davidson thought for a moment before making the call.

The river was the {7-Spades} and Nguyen thought for a long time before checking. Davidson instantly moved all in for his last 18,100 chips. Nguyen went into the tank, cut out his chips, and made the big call.

Davidson shrugged his shoulders and flipped {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades} for just ace high, as Nguyen revealed {J-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for just a pair of sevens! A remarkable call by Nguyen that received the admiration from all at the table, even Davidson, who couldn't help but feel unfortunate to be exiting the tournament.

"He bet too much!" said Nguyen as he now sits with 60,000 chips.

Recent Double-Ups

Frank Bianco check-called a bet of 3,000 on a flop of {A-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {7-Diamonds}. Both players checked the {6-Clubs} that hit the turn. When the river fell {7-Clubs} Bianco moved all in for about 7,000. His opponent made the call with {A-Diamonds} {8-Clubs}, a hand that was no match for Bianco's full house, {6-Spades} {7-Spades}. Bianco is now up to 22,000.

Charles Chua also doubled up twice in succession, first with kings, and then against Daisy Wain with {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} against her {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs} when a king hit the flop and an ace hit the turn. With those two doubles, Chua has rocketed up to 89,000.

Another Chair Down

A salute to fallen comrades
A salute to fallen comrades
Emad Tahtouh is the latest player to break a chair in the tournament area. It was quickly replaced by a member of the tournament staff, and the dead chair was taken to the chair graveyard behind a PokerStars.net screen near media row. That makes the dead chair count at least five, but given the fragility displayed by these chairs, the number is most likely higher.

A floor person has also just announced that, "No smoking in the tournament area also means no smoking on the rail. You need to be inside the restaurant area." We've seen several players over the last few days run to the rail for a quick cigarette and then run back to their tables.

Chucky's Sequel Bombs

So Long Chucky
So Long Chucky

Michael Pedley and a young gentleman whom we have nicknamed "Chucky" for his unusual activities at the table yesterday (read more about it here or see the video below), both went to a flop of {7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{K-Hearts}.

Pedley led out for 3,000 before Chucky shoved all in for his last 11,000. Pedley made the call with {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the flush draw, but actually found himself with the best hand as Chucky was also drawing with {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for an open-ended straight draw.

The turn was the {4-Clubs} and the river the {K-Spades} missing both players, as Pedley took it down to jump to 56,000 and end the entertaining run of Chucky in the Main Event.

We caught up with Terrence Chan yesterday to give us his account of Chucky's play on Day 1c.

Rags to Riches

Quinn Do raised to 2,000 from middle position. Unbeknownst to the table, he was on a steal with {7-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}. The big blind raised him all in to 7,000 with {9-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}, and Quinn decided to call. He hit the board in a big way, {7-Spades} {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} to send another player to the rail.

"Look how bad I play," Do joked as he stacked up his 68,000 chips.

Talk About an Action Flop

The action flop was {6-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}, which saw Robert Dobbs and Frank Bianco get all of their chips into the middle.

Bianco liked his {J-Spades}{9-Clubs} for top two pair, but didn't like it so much when Dobbs revealed {6-Hearts}{6-Spades} for a set of sixes. The turn was the {8-Hearts} and river the {2-Spades}, doubling Dobbs up to 20,500 with Bianco falling to 12,000.

Is the Building on Fire?

The pace of bust-outs has been relentless during the first hour of play, almost as if players would rather be anywhere but here. Already 40 players have been trimmed from the starting field of 208, almost 20 percent of the total number of players. Obviously this pace isn't sustainable, but it seems clear that many of the the short stacks are willing to jam their stacks in on a gamble.

William Te Jr. is the latest short stack to take that risk and lose. He moved all in preflop with {K-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} and was called by Masayuki Nagata, who tabled {A-Spades} {J-Spades}. An ace on the flop sealed the deal for Nagata and sent Te to the rail.

Johnny Chan Eliminated

Johnny Chan Eliminated
Johnny Chan had battled with a short stack for most of this tournament and when he found {A-?}{K-?} it looked like a good spot to try and double up. He found himself racing as his opponent tabled pocket eights.

The board ran out {3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} and although Chan found an ace on the river, his opponent had turned a set to send the legend of poker to the rail.
