Dinner Break

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

The 72 remaining players are on their 45-minute dinner break. There are currently 117 entries registered into the tournament, already up 13 more than last year. Registration is open till the end of the dinner break, so the field might just grow even a bit bigger. Check back in 45 minutes as we'll bring you updates for the last 4 remaining levels of the day.

Kornuth Catches Fire

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Earlier this level Chance Kornuth was knocking on elimination's door, down to what looked to be 20,000 or so. He's now sitting on a stack of 140,000!

His latest victim was none other than Andrew Lichtenberger. It happened when a player opened for 4,000, Kornuth three-bet to 10,500, and Lichtenberger shipped for 50,000 or so. The original raiser folded, Kornuth called with {10-}{10-}, and his pocket pair held against "Lucky Chewy's" {a-}{10-} suited.

It appears Lichtenberger is going to reenter.

Yunis Looking Strong, Koon Slipping

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Jason Koon just raised under the gun to 3,800 and the action folded to Nick Yunis who three-bet from the small blind to 9,100. Koon gave it some thought before calling, and the two went heads up to the flop.

The flop brought out {A-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{K-Hearts} and Yunis bet 11,500, to which Koon folded, knocking him down to 60,000 chips. Yunis meanwhile is among the leaders with about 150,000 chips right now.

Gross Doubles Through Aido

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Jeff Gross just raised from the button to 3,400 and Sergio Aido three-bet from the big blind to 10,200. Gross made the call and the flop brought out {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, on which Aido bet 7,000.

Gross called Aido's bet on the flop and the turn brought the {8-Clubs}. Now Aido checked, and Gross moved all in for 17,700.

Aido tanked for quite some time before throwing chips into the middle to make the call.

Gross: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Aido: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}

The river brought the {10-Spades}, and Gross received a full double up.

Chewed Up and Spit Out

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

2015 GPI Player of the Year Byron Kaverman raised to 3,700 under the fun and action folded to Stevan Chew, who three-bet to 10,200 on the button. The blinds both folded, Kaverman moved all in, and Chew called off for right around 50,000.

Kaverman: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Chew: {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}

It was a bad spot for the Australian, and he watched helplessly as the board ran out a dry {k-Clubs}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}.

Rast's Delay Not Long Enough

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Brian Rast only just entered the event after his flight got delayed and he got stuck in Sydney for a little bit longer this morning. The 50,000 he got to start with are now in possession of his former neighbor Byron Kaverman.

Home town player Sam Higgs opened the cutoff and Byron Kaverman called from the button. Brian Rast in the small blind squeezed and Higgs made the call. Kaverman now back shoved all in for 66,200 and Rast called for his 51,000 after giving it some thoughts. Higgs tanked for a bit, asked how much it exactly was to call, but decided against it in the end and slid his cards into the muck.

Rast: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Kaverman: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

While Higgs later admitted to have had better than both, all the chips went to Kaverman in the end after the board ran out {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. That was bustout number two for Rast, which means no more tries left for him.

Big Double for Kozlov

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Benny Spindler raised to 3,700 from the cutoff only to have Martin Kozlov three-bet to 12,600 from the big blind. Spindler thought long and hard before moving all in, and Kozlov double checked his cards before calling off for 70,200 total.

Spindler: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Kozlov: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Kozlov was well out in front and looking to dodge a seven, which is exactly what he did as the board ran out a clean {3-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}.

Kanit Gone for a Second Time

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Action folded to Philipp Gruissem in the small blind and he simply moved all in to put the pressure on Mustapha Kanit, who was sitting with 13,900 in the big. There was clearly some context we missed before we arrived — perhaps Kanit saying he was going to call in such a situation — as the two were all smiles and joking around.

Kanit asked Gruissem to look in his eyes, but the man known as "Philbort" instead covered them with his hands. Kanit tried to pry them away from Gruissem's face but was unsuccessful. Again, it was all done in jest.

Kanit stated that he liked his hand; in fact, it was one of his favorites. Still, he picked up his cards and moved them forward as if he was going to fold. Then, just like that, he used his other hand to spike in his chips, much to the surprise of Gruissem.

Gruissem: {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Kanit: {q-Spades}{9-Spades}

"No, I knew it," Kanit bemoaned upon discovering he had kicker problems.

The {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{j-Diamonds} flop gave Gruissem trips, but Kanit was quite excited that he picked up an open-ender.

"Eight ball," he called. Unfortunately for him, the dealer did not oblige, instead putting up the {7-Hearts} on the turn followed by the {2-Hearts} on the river.

"Enjoy your tournament guys," Kanit offered before taking his leave from the tournament for good.
