Enter the Wu

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

On the {3-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop we saw Wu Zhou announce himself all in for about 23,000, coming over the top of an opponent's sizable bet.

The other player in the hand stood as he said "you have two threes don't ya," but despite having an uncanny read on the hand, he called off and tabled the {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for bottom set.

Sure enough, Zhou revealed the {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for middle set, showing down the exact hand his opponent had feared. The dealer produced the {8-Clubs} on the turn, and the {a-Spades} on the river, keeping Zhou's set out in front and sending a huge pot his way.

Poker is Phung

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Cuong Phung is continuing his hot start, this time at the hands of actor/poker player James Woods. With the board reading {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}, Mr. Woods had a bet of 9,200 in front of him and Phung had a larger bet out in front of his cards - enough to bust Woods if he called and lost. "I wish I had a better kicker," said Woods, adding "I swear to God I'd call you with Ace high". Woods ended up tossing his cards into the muck, a look of regret all over his face. "I know you had a flush draw. King Jack of hearts," James probed. Nothing from Phung as he added more to his stack while Woods has lost more than half of what he started with.

Everybody Cuong Phung Tonight

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The sight of a bright red all-in button sitting in front of a player's stack is standard in tournament poker... just not on the second deal of the day.

For Atlantic City native and local grinder Cuong Phung, that sight was a sweet one, as he just flopped a set of sixes to double up on just the second hand he saw.

The flop read {5-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{6-Spades} when we caught the action, and from an examination of the scene it turned out Phung had checked the flop, along with another player, before James Woods bet 2,200 to test the waters. Phung sprung into action with a raise to 5,500 or so, which is when the aforementioned bright red button made its appearance.

The third player in the hand moved all in for 16,825 more, forcing a brief tank-fold from Woods before Phung snapped the bet off with {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. His opponent was disgusted to see the bad news, and he revealed his {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} with the despondent motion of a man who knew only one card in the deck could save him.

When the turn ({2-Spades}) and river ({3-Diamonds}) failed to deliver the case five, Phung notched the early double to claim the chip lead, while his forlorn opponent immediately began searching his pockets for the $560 needed to re-enter.

Phung is no stranger to success here at the Borgata, earning nearly $700,000 in his career playing predominately in this venue, and scoring a 7th place finish to bubble the televised final table of the WPT Main Event Championship at the 2013 Borgata Winter Poker Open.

Just Quads...

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

With the board reading {Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}, Chris Laieta was pleasantly surprised when his opponent moved all in. It was an easy call for him with {4-Clubs}{4-Spades} and his opponent knew he was drawing dead with {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}... no flush would save him today. Chris doubled up to 50,000 in chips and hopes this good start continues the rest of the day.

Second Verse, Same as the First

Day 1a chip leader Tommy Martone
Day 1a chip leader Tommy Martone

Good morning and welcome back to the luxurious Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for Day 1b of the Borgata Spring Poker Open $560 buy-in $1 Million Guaranteed Reentry event. Day 1a attracted a total of 358 entries - we will let you know how many survivors as soon as the information becomes available - and the number of entrants is likely to grow throughout the week. Thursday is likely to be a crazy day, as both Day 1c and Day 1d will take place.

DJ and professional poker player Tommy Martone amassed the largest stack on Tuesday, ending Day 1a with 366,500 chips. Martone won a massive, four-way, preflop all in holding two nines, making a full house by the turn. He added a few more pots as the day wained, and may return on Friday for Day 2 as the chip leader.

All of the players who were eliminated on Day 1a, including Micah Raskin who busted twice, are allowed to reenter here on Day 1b or try again tomorrow during Day 1c or 1d. Likewise, if a player survived the day but wants to try and bag a larger stack, they are also allowed to reenter.

The cards will be in the air in roughly 30 minutes, and we are scheduled to play 15 30-minute levels with a 15-minute break after every three. There is no dinner break scheduled, but the players will have plenty of time to sit down and enjoy a nice meal at one of Borgata's countless top-class restaurants after the day concludes at roughly 8 p.m.

Be sure to stay tuned for updates directly from the tournament floor right here on PokerNews!
