Day 1a Completed

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante

The first flight of Event #17: $2,700 Championship has now come to an end after eight exciting levels of play. A total of 62 entry slips were sold, with just 30 remaining by nights end, and finding the biggest stack from Day 1a was Jonathan Hanner.

Hanner remained under the radar for the better portion of the day and really started to surge during the latter portion of this flight. He seemed to catch wind under his sails after the last break and took that momentum all the way to the end where he bagged an immense 201,600.

The closest behind the leader is Robert Chasen who ran hot early in the day and cooled off towards the end, although he still bagged 167,600 which is still good for second on the totem pole from this flight. Three other stacks that round out the top five are Kevin Javier (150,600), Shaun O'Donnell (136,100), and Michael Marder (120,600).

Notable mentions from the first flight of the event include David Jackson (100,400), Bin Weng (100,600), Jonathan Gilliam (84,800), Arian Stolt (82,400), Chris Reslock (70,300), Ricky Guan (56,700), Richard Tuhrim (45,600), Anthony Maio (38,900), and Katie Stone (38,000).

The survivors from this flight will combine with the next two Day 1 players that bag after eight levels and will be returning on Tuesday, November 19 to fight it out for another eight levels of play, ending after level 16. The tournament will bump the blinds up to 75-minutes in length after level 10 and the last two days will have 90-minute levels.

That wraps it up for the PokerNews live coverage of Day 1a, but tune in tomorrow for Day 1b.

The turned board showed {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} and there was around 20,000 in the pot. Michael Marder checked to Nicholas Verderamo who bet 12,500 and Marder check-called to see the {q-Spades} river card.

Marder checked to Verderamo who instantly moved all in for 23,200 and Marder took a moment to think but in the end, he called.

"You're good," said Verderamo as he tabled {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a missed flush draw and Marder showed his {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, giving him a set of nickels and more than enough to take down the pot, sending Verderamo out the door late in Day 1a.

Hanner Adds to Lead

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante

A player opened from under the gun to 1,700, Jonathan Hanner called in the small blind and Anthony Maio defended his big. The dealer spread out {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}{5-Hearts} on the flop, action checked to the preflop aggressor and they bet 2,600.

Hanner was the only one to stick around to see the {9-Diamonds} where both players checked to the {4-Spades} river. Hanner fired in 10,000 and his opponent snap-folded, shipping another late pot to Hanner as he extends his lead.

Last Level of the Night

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante

The tournament is now on the last level of the night and all remaining players at the end of this level will bag up, moving on to Day 2. A total of eight levels will be played on every Day 1, but the late registration period remains open until the end of level 10 (Day 2).

Tuhrim Flops the Goods

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante

Richard Tuhrim opened to 1,500 from under the gun and two players called before the big blind player who pumped it up to 6,700. Tuhrim was the only runner to call the three-bet and the flop came down {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}.

The big blind player bet 4,500 and Tuhrim swiftly raised to 11,000. His opponent jammed and Tuhrim snap-called for his 30,600 stack.

Richard Tuhrim: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

The {10-Diamonds} turn and {q-Diamonds} river changed not a thing as Tuhrim scooped in the pot, thanks to his flopped flush, doubling through his opponent in the process of doing so.
