Mucking the Winner

Geshkenbein can't believe it
Geshkenbein can't believe it
We just caught the very end of this hand, but we'll mention it anyways as there's not much going on at the moment.

We walked up to the table to see a board of {K-?} {J-?} {8-?} {7-?} {J-?} spread out in the middle, and Alexander Selishchev had checked with a pot of about 20,000 up for grabs. His opponent, Vladamir Geshkenbein sat in the tank for several minutes. At first, it looked like he was about to move all in. But his fingers were clumsy, and he was unable to get ahold of his stacks properly. From his body language, it appeared that he actually gave up trying to go all in and decided to take the easy way out by checking behind instead. When he did, Selischev tabled {A-?} {K-?} for kings up. Geshkenbein shook his head and tossed his cards into the muck.

The pot was pushed to Selischev, and just as the dealer scooped up the board with the winning hand, Geshkenbein bolted out of his chair. "Wait, there were two jacks there?"

The table confirmed, and Geshkenbein fell backwards into his chair. He claims to have folded a jack after mistakenly thinking it was two kings on board. It didn't look like an angle; Geshkenbein was clearly gutted as he sat there fingering his ~10,000 remaining chips. Just to make things better, Thierry van den Berg recounted the whole event for him. "Yes, he checked, and you grabbed the chips but then you checked. He had ace-king but there was jack-jack on the board."

And just to take it one step further, Luca Pagano, Vitaly Lunkin, and van den Berg all took turns reminding the young Russian to table his hand to avoid mistakes like that in the future. Lesson learned, we're guessing.

Sarwer Resets His Stack

Jeff Sarwer
Jeff Sarwer
It's been a long grind back for Jeff Sarwer, but he finally finds himself back over his starting stack for the first time since the first level.

On a flop of {Q-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {Q-Spades}, Sarwer checked to the player on the other side of the table. The unknown player flicked out a bet of 5,000, and Sarwer announced a check-raise all in for 20,475. After spending some quality time in the tank, the player released his cards, and Sarwer exhaled deeply. He's back to about 33.000 now and has his sights set on Day 2.

Rifat and Weep

The gentleman in seat one raised to 1,600, only for chipped-up Rifat Palevic to his immediate left to make it 3,600. Everyone else got out of their way, Mr. Seat One called, and they saw a flop.

Flop: {7-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}

Both players unexpectedly checked.

Turn: {9-Hearts}

Mr. Seat One bet out 5,100 and Palevic called. Onwards.

River: {10-Diamonds}

Mr. Seat One now bet 13,100, followed by an insta-call from Palevic - who then rather violently threw his pocket {J-Spades} {J-Diamonds} back to the dealer when Mr. Seat One turned over {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} for a turned set and rivered full house.

Palevic, who looked to be our chip leader before the start of the hand, is still looking good on 115,000 or so.

Hong Tough

After an excellent day of slow but sure upward grindage, Chaz Chattha is right back down to 26,500.

We caught up with him on the {J-Spades} {8-Hearts} {8-Spades} flop, when Catherine Hong bet out 2,100. Chattha made it 6,200, Hong called, and they proceeded.

We must confess that we were momentarily distracted on the {K-Hearts} turn so we missed the action, but re-focused come the {6-Hearts} turn, which Hong checked. Chattha bet a chunky 15,000 and Hong called.

Chattha: {8-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} for flopped trips
Hong: {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts} for flopped two pair that turned into a flush on the river

"Nice hand," sighed Chattha, tapping the table in acknowledgment. Hong, nonchalantly munching on a sandwich, is up to 80,000.

Puker News

A bit of a disturbance in the tournament room right now. During or just after the break, some unfortunate soul was unable to hold their lunch and -- well, there's no real quaint way to say this -- vomited all over the tournament floor.

A swarm of housekeepers carrying mops and brooms rushed to the scene of the crime, and they're furiously trying to rid the room of the unpleasant sight and smell.

You may want to stay away from the carpaccio on the buffet this week.
