Day 1a Completed!

Loic Sa, the man to catch
Loic Sa, the man to catch

Well that's all folks, as Day 1a of EPT Barcelona, brought to you by PokerStars, draws to a close and the weary looking poker players make their way from the casino after a gruelling 12 hour shift at the tables someone has to give you a quick recap of today's action and that someone is me.

A total of 263 players passed through the doors of the Casino de Barcelona and over the course of the day they were whittled down until the board showed 141 players still had chips remaining, though that number may change when the official counts are in overnight.

No less than thirteen Team PokerStars took to the felt today, though a lot less than that will be returning for Day 2 on Wednesday. Darus Suharto was the first of them to be eliminated, first running his pocket kings straight into a set of queens, then moving the rest of his stack in with a pair of fives and running into a pair of jacks.

The 2009 EPT Barcelona winner, Carter Phillips started brightly but will not comoing back for more after bluffing off the majority of his stack with a gutshot straight draw whilst Team PokerStars Germany Michael Keiner was sat there with a set.

With Phillips unable to retain his title it is up to another young gun to step up to the plate and that young man could be Frenchman Loic Sa, who appeared from nowhere to become our overnight chipleader with a massive stack of 217,700 chips!

We will return to the Casino de Barcelona at 1200 noon local time for Day 1b of the 2010 EPT Barcelona. We are expecting a bumper crowd that includes the likes of PokerStars pros Daniel Negreanu and Liv Boeree along with a whole host of poker's greats. make sure you do not miss a thing by tuning into PokerNews.

Until then, goodnight from Spain. Catch you all tomorrow!

Gomes Tripled, Mattern Crippled

A spot of poor luck for Matthias de Meulder, a spot of very poor luck for Arnaud Mattern, and a spot of amazing fine luck for Alexandre Gomes as the three of them clashed in an all-Team PokerStars Pro three-way showdown.

Gomes raised to 2,500 under the gun and de Meulder called in the cutoff. The gent on the button called too, and Mattern called as well from the big blind, and they saw a flop.

Flop: {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

It checked around to de Meulder who bet 5,700. The button folded, but Mattern went all in for around 27,000. Gomes called all in for a shade less, and after a while de Meulder called as well.

"You don't have a set of jacks, do you?" asked Mattern as they turned their cards over.

De Meulder: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for an overpair
Mattern: {5-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for two pair
Gomes: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} for that set of jacks

Gomes tripled up to around 90,000 and de Meulder dropped to 45,000. Mattern got the side pot, but it only consisted of around one big blind, which went in the next hand. Mattern couldn't find any miracles, and was gone on the very last hand of the night.

4 Is the Magic Number

...Or at least it is the magic answer to the magic question, "How many hands are they playing before close of play?"

The clock has been stopped. Chip leader at the moment seems to be Loic Sa on 205,000. All media have been summarily ejected from the tournament area, but we're going to do our best to lurk at the sidelines. Please stand by.

Sarwer in Trouble

Jeff Sarwer
Jeff Sarwer

Jeff Sarwer has taken a serious hit and is down to less than 10 big blinds.

Already pretty short, he decided to give an even shorter stack a spin with {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}. The shortie's {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flopped the whole world, the board running out {9-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, and Sarwer was reduced to just 9,500.

De Meulder Loses Chips and Masseuse

Matthias De Meulder
Matthias De Meulder

Belgian Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder finds himself back down to 82,000 chips after giving up his hand against the extremely aggressive Daniel Ferreira.

We caught up with the action on a board reading {5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Spades}{8-Clubs}, with over 15,000 chips in the pot. Ferreira checked in the small blind, de Meulder bet 6,400 only to see his opponent check-raise to a total of 16,000.

De Meulder went into the tank, well as deep as one possibly could with a masseuse rubbing ones back, and whilst in there he asked Ferreira how many chips he had left. A quick count revealed it was around 38,500, or more importantly, around half of the Belgian's own stack.

With this he released his hand into the muck and then had to stump up some hard earned cash to pay for his, now finished, massage.

De Meulder now has 82,000 whilst Ferreira sits on a 63,700 stack

Team Pokerstars Pro Richard Toth Eliminated

Richard Toth eliminated
Richard Toth eliminated

Team Pokerstars Pro has just had a table change and with it a change of misfortune that has resulted in his exit from EPT Barcelona.

We spoke to Toth just after his exit and he explained to us that he had just been moved to the table when he lost a lot of chips to a player holding a set. Toth had no reads on any of the players and he later learnt that the guy was a rock. A couple of hands later and Toth is in a hand with the same player and this is how it played out.

The solid player opens for 2,000 and Toth calls in the in the Big Blind. The flop is {8-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {q-Clubs} and Toth checks the action to the solid player who bets 3,500 and Toth calls. The turn is {3-Diamonds} and the solid player puts Toth all-in. Toth thought for a very long time before eventually folding what he later told me was top pair.

Toth was then left very short and after the button opened with a raise Toth shoved with Ace King and was called by the raiser who was holding a pair of sixes. The Aces and Kings in the deck were on holiday and Toth was eliminated.

Ruling Against Sarwer Works In His favour

Jeff Sarwer
Jeff Sarwer

Everything seems to have run extremely smoothly here at EPT Barcelona but just now there was the need for one of the tournament officials to step in.

The action folded around to Jeff Sarwer in the small blind and he simply completed. His opponent in the big blind raised it up to 2,200 and after a brief pause, Sarwer announced raise but only put in 2,200 worth of chips. Realising his mistake, he then took back the two red 1,000 chips and replaced them with a single yellow 5,000 chip, much to the dismay to some of his table mates.

The floor was called and it was ruled that Sarwer could now only make a min-raise, which he did and his opponent quickly called.

Flop: {k-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

Both players simply tapped the table and checked.

Turn: {3-Clubs}

Sarwer now quickly counts out a small tower of 6,600 chips and topples them over the line, which is enough to fold out his opponent.

A brief discussion after the hand saw all the players settle their differences and Table 8 is one big happy family once again. Awww!
