The Final Bell Has Rung on Day 1b

Luis Rafas The Chip Leader
Luis Rafas The Chip Leader

Yesterday 263 people stumped up the €5,300 entry fee to play in this magnificent event. Today, a field of 495 people dwarfed the attendance of the previous day. You could feel the tight squeeze in the room and the additional voyeurs who seemed to join at the rail today exacerbated it. It was little wonder that there were so many more spectators when you consider the quality of field that turned up to play.

There were twenty-two Team PokerStars Pros and in addition to that, quality professionals from all over the globe strengthened the field. But even the best players in the world are not invincible and the first few levels of play swallowed up the likes of Angel Guillen, John Duthie, Dario Minieri and Fabian Quoss.

After his impressive deep run at EPT Vienna all eyes were on Daniel Negreanu to see if he could repeat his feat of a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it was not to be Negreanu’s tournament as he was eliminated when all the money went in on the turn chasing a flush that proved as elusive as Lord Lucan.

EPT London winner David Vamplew was then eliminated and was quickly followed by some more of the best of British in Toby Lewis and John Eames. One young British player who made a real impression today was Roberto Romanello who – despite being on a table dripping with quality all day – ended with 159,200 chips.

Another star today was team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden, unfortunately his shine was dimmed somewhat towards the end of the night when he lost huge pots to Dominic Nitsche and Andrea Benelli and fell from the dizzy heights of 100,000+ to 53,400. Then right at the death Team Pokerstars Pro Leo Fernandez found his feet in the tournament when he made a huge call for all of his chips holding pocket queens on a board containing a made flush and an Ace. His read was correct and he finished the day as one of the top contenders with 164,400.

But at the end of all of these recaps there is one player who has managed to accumulate more chips than the rest. Yesterday that person was Loic Sa when he bagged and tagged 217,700. Today that man was Luis Rufas and to be fair he lead for most of the day. Not only did he finish on top of the pile today but his plastic bag containing 232,100 was a haul greater than any of the other 758 people who entered this tournament.

Tomorrow we return at 12:00 for Day 2 where 399 people – yes you heard me 399 people - including messrs Sa and Rufas return to try and make it through to Day 3. Do not miss out!

4 More

The clock has been stopped and our remaining runners will be playing four more hands before bagging and tagging for the night.

Please stand by.

No Johnny No No No!

Team Pokerstars Pro Johnny Lodden has played fantastically well all day and ran his stack over the 100,000 mark. Unfortunately, he has taken a big setback. We arrived at the table and could see that a sizeable chunk of his stack was missing and Dominic Nitsche's stack had grown by the same size. We believe that Lodden ran {a-} {8-} into the pocket Kings of Nitsche in a 90,000 pot.

Then it went from bad to worse in this next hand.

Lodden opened for 2,500 under the gun and Andrea Benelli called as did two more players. The flop was {2-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} and the big blind checked over to Lodden who bet 5,150 and Benelli was the only player to call.

The turn was the {a-Spades} and Lodden placed a meaty bet of 13,800 into the middle and Benelli made the call. The river was a tricky looking {3-Diamonds} and Lodden bet 22,000. Benelli had a really good think about it before finally calling. Lodden showed {a-Hearts} {k-Clubs} and Benelli was the most relieved man in the building when he turned over {a-Clubs} {4-Clubs} for two pair and the winning hand.

Lodden was knocked down from the dizzy heights of the leader board to ~50,000

Hong Looking Flushed

Catherine Hong
Catherine Hong

Catherine Hong, girlfriend of Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier has just taken a big hit to her stack after she made a great on the flop.

She opened from early position with a raise to 2,700 and only the big blind called.

Flop: {3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades} The big blind instantly moves all-in, for a total of 17,800 chips, a huge overbet. From the look on Hong's face she was frantically trying to put him on a hand and after about a minute she decided she had the best hand and made the call.

Mr Overbet: {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Hong: {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Hong was in front with top pair but had to avoid a seven, nine or queen

Turn: {K-Diamonds} A bad card for Hong as it gave her opponent more outs to a flush draw.

River: {Q-Diamonds} Wow! Not only did Mrs Elky's hand lose to a flush, it lost to a runner-runner straight flush!

Hong is now down to around 18,000

No Clemency for Clemencon

Tristan Clemencon
Tristan Clemencon

Tristan Clemencon shoved under the gun for just 13,475 and a few seats down Jan Collado made the call. On their backs, gentlemen.

Clemencon: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Collado: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}

It was a real up-and-down sort of board for Clemencon, but it ended on a down. Clemencon made the final table at the WPT in Barcelona a few months back, but he's not going to do it this time at the EPT as he is now busted. COllado is at 67,000.

Rufas Is Ruthless

Luis Rufas
Luis Rufas

Current chipleader, Luis Rufas shows no sign of taking his foot off the gas, as he continues to splash chips around like they are going out of fashion.

His early postion raised to 2,500, two folds later and the action was on the man with the monster stack. A quick check of his cards and he three-bet to 8,200, folding out everyone else at the table, including the initial raiser, who accidentally revealed {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} as he mucked his hand.

Rufas' stack grows past the 220,000 mark
