Day 1a Completed

Hirleman Ahead as Day 1a Done

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante
Mark Hirleman
Mark Hirleman

As the dust settles on the tournament area and the remaining 130-odd players scurry out into the Copenhagen evening in an effort to get fed (for some reason restaurants seem to close at around 9.30 here), American online qualifier Mark Hirleman tops the chip counts on 163,400. He got the bulk of his stack in one big hand and will be the man to beat come Day 2 - unless an even bigger stack emerges during tomorrow's second flight of starters.

Yes indeed, all our Day 1a survivors now get to spend a pleasant and relaxing day enjoying the many sights and delights of Copenhagen before they return to get down to the serious business of making the money come Day 2. Among them are Annette Obrestad, Peter Eastgate, Arnaud Mattern and Johnny Lodden. Per Linde seems to be in second place behind Hirleman, on 150,900.

Tomorrow's Day 1b field looks to be bigger, and possibly even better than today's - among those expected to try their luck are Sebastian Ruthenberg, Jake Cody, JP Kelly and Viktor Blom. We'll be back on the ballroom floor at the Radisson Blu Scandinavia from noon CET to watch them raise, reraise and four-bet shove their way to possible victory. Be sure to join us then.

Give the Wolf What Belongs to the Wolf!

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

The last three hands were called, media were duly ejected and the bags for the chips brought into view. But the day's play isn't over til it's over, and there was still time to squeeze in an elimination. Unfortunately, the player doing the eliminating is not sat in his original seat, and until we get seat cards that means he's nameless. If you know him, then this description of his victory will ring a bell*:

He stood up over the table with his arms upraised shouting what sounded like, "MAMF! MAMF! MAMF! You have the honour to play me!"

The board had brought a jack and a queen on the flop, and his hand, on its back, was {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} while his soon-to-be-leaving opponent held {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. This situation had got both of their relatively small stacks flying in.

"Now I can play!" the gent (smoking one of those fake cigars which let off 'smoke') shouted, although he must know that the end of the day is minutes away.

"Give the wolf what belongs to the wolf," he ended cryptically, before settling down to stack and bag his 40k. That is honestly the most excitement expressed by any of the players here today.

*Discovered later to be Austrian Elmar Dirnberger.

Linde Us a Fiver

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante
Per Linde
Per Linde

Per Linde is now flirting with the chip lead after finding pocket aces to knock out a player holding pocket queens. He's at around 130,000.

Other giganto-stacks include Mark Hirleman (still 140,000), Kenneth Johnson (125,000), Iulian-Georgian Ruxandescu (120,000) and Koen Schiepers (110,000).

Eastgate Heading North

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante
My precious...
My precious...

Another gentleman who has had an excellent couple of levels is 2008 World Champion Peter Eastgate - after dropping right down to around 11,000 a couple hours ago, he's now back up to the environs of 60,000.

Last Level Turnarounds

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

Stavros Liantiniotis is out, having unsuccessfully raced his {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} vs. {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}, all in preflop.

Elsewhere those who looked in a little bit of trouble chipwise last level have made stirling progress back into the tournament. Ciaran Burke has risen from 6,000 to 20,050 but the Climber of the Day is definitely Anders Berg who has turned 8,000 to 50,000 in just half a level! Apart from his initial double up with threes there must have been a ton of action involving the bespectacled Norwegian as he's now on a healthy 50,000!

Hirled into the Lead

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

A gentleman in mid position opened, only for Johnny Lodden to make it 3,800 from the cutoff. Mark Hirleman called from the small blind; the original raiser tanked up for a bit and then called too.

Flop: {k-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades}

Hirleman checked to Original Raiser, who bet 6,600, and the action proceeded to Lodden, who now made it 15,250 to go. Hirleman tanked up for some time before flat-calling, his hand shaking ever so slightly as he tossed the chips into the middle. Original Raiser now took over tanking duties, and after an admirable three minutes or so, also called.

Turn: {10-Hearts}

Hirleman checked again, and this time - not without several minutes' worth of tanking - both Original Raiser and Lodden checked behind.

River: {10-Diamonds}

The hand had now been going on for well over 10 minutes, and Hirleman, so passive up until this point, now bet out 25,000. The folds from his opponents were surprisingly and mercifully swift, and Hirleman took the huge pot to propel him into the chip lead - around 140,000 by the looks of it.

Jorgensen Ruiz Juan's Bluff

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante

Theo Jorgensen had thrown out 10,000 with only about the same behind on on a {10-Spades}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades} board. Deep in the tank, Juan Ruiz though for ages before moving all-in, Jorgensen instantly folded and Ruiz showed him the lowly {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts} which fairly shocked the Dane.

Time to Take a Stani

Level 8 : 400/800, 75 ante
Kevin Stani
Kevin Stani

Martin Wendt fired out 6,500 on a {K-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {8-Hearts} flop only for EPT Tallinn victor Kevin Stani to reraise all-in for around 16,000 more. Wendt, who has had a tough last hour or so, reluctantly folded before asking, "Did you have it?"

Stani quietly nodded.
