McDonald Beats Augdal with Higher Straight

Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Mike "Timex" McDonald fired a bet of 850 on the {7-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts} board before Terje Augdal made the call. A third player in the hand, the woman on the button, also called and the dealer dealt the {3-Hearts} on the turn. McDonald checked and Augdal bet 2,000. The woman called and McDonald called.

The river was the {Q-Diamonds} and McDonald checked. Augdal bet 3,000 and the woman folded. McDonald called.

Augdal showed the {6-Spades}{6-Clubs} for a seven-high straight. McDonald turned up a high straight with the {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and won the pot.

Four Characters Sat in a Row

You couldn't get a bigger mixture of characters than Ville Wahlbeck, Ilan Boujenah, Ran Azor, and Dario Minieri. All four players are sat in a row in a corner if the main room.

Azor just won a small pot. He raised from under the gun and was called in four spots, including Minieri. The flop fell {7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Azor continued for 1,100 and got folds from all his opponents.

De Meulder Gives It Up

Team Pro Christophe De Meulder opened for 375 from early position and was called by a middle-position player. The button then came along for the ride, both blinds folded, and the flop fell {J-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{9-Hearts}.

De Meulder wasted little time in betting 375, only the button called, and the dealer burned and turned the {6-Diamonds}. This time both players checked, and then De Meulder checked the {5-Clubs} river. The button took the opportunity to fire out 1,500, and it did the trick as the Belgian pro folded his hand.

Despite losing that hand, De Meulder is still up over the starting stack with 36,000.

Interesting EPT Barcelona Facts

  • It’s been on the EPT schedule since Season 1.
  • No Spaniard has ever won the title. The closest to do so was Dragan Kostic and Jesus Cortes Lizano, who both finished as runner-up in Season 8 and Season 7 respectively.
  • No player has ever made the final table twice.
  • Many Americans have made the final table over the years including Phil Ivey (2nd in Season 3), Jason Mercier (6th in Season 5) and Adam Junglen (6th in Season 4), but Carter Phillips was the only American to win the event, doing so in Season 6 after conquering a field of 479 players for €850,000.
  • There have been two winners from Sweden (Season 1 & 7) and two from Germany (Seasons 5 & 8); while the other winners have hailed from France (Season 2), Norway (Season 3), Denmark (Season 4) and United States (Season 6).

Good Start for Frankenberger

An early-position player raised to 375 and received a call from Ondrej Vinklarek in middle position. Season IX World Poker Tour Player of the Year Andy Frankenberger then put in a three-bet to 1,100, which proved enough to win the pot as both his opponents folded.

It wasn't much of a hand, but it gave us an excuse to let you know that Frankenberger is already up to 41,000.

[Removed:288] Keeps Lowering His Bets

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Vladimir Petrovich Sidorenko raised to 300 from late position and received a call from [Removed:283] in the small blind. The Italian, who if you recall played the 2012 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller, then checked in the dark prior to the {5-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{A-Spades} flop.

Sidorenko apprehensively tossed out a T1,000 chip, and then called when [Removed:288] check-raised to 2,500. [Removed:288] then bet 1,500 on the {8-Clubs} turn, Sidorenko called, and the {K-Spades} peeled off on the river. This time [Removed:288] bet just 200, which Sidorenko called.

[Removed:288] tabled {7-Spades}{5-Clubs} for aces and fives, but it was no good as Sidorenko revealed {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} for trips. [Removed:288], who is certainly an action player, is already down to 7,000.
