Huge Field Set for Day 1b of EPT Berlin

Berlin, Germany
Berlin, Germany

Welcome back to PokerNews' coverage of the €5,300 European Poker Tour Berlin Main Event. Yesterday, Day 1a attracted 243 players with 110 of them surviving to make Day 2. Vladimir Geshkenbein narrowly edged out Jens Weigel to claim the chip lead and the competitors today will have a tall task in front of them if they want to eclipse the 201,600-chip mark that Geshkenbein has set.

Today is set to be a massive day of action and the field size will represent just that. It's already being planned that the staff will make use of the Spielbank Casino just a few yards away from the luxurious Hyatt Hotel in order to accommodate the monster field.

Team PokerStars SportStars Boris Becker and Fatima Moreira de Melo will be taking to the felt along with a slew of Team Pros including world champion Pius Heinz, 2010 world champion Jonathan Duhamel, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, Sandra Naujoks, Sebastian Ruthenberg, Lex Veldhuis, Liv Boeree, Andre Akkari, Arnaud Mattern, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov and Vanessa Rousso.

Play is set to kick off promptly at noon local time and PokerNews will be going live with updates then. Another 10 levels will be in the books when it's all said and done, so be sure to stick around and sweat some of the biggest names in poker all day long!

Shih's Early Three-Bet Fails

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Action folded over to a player in middle position and he raised to 400. Mike "Timex" McDonald called from the hijack seat, the player on the button called and then Kenny Shih three-bet to 1,550 from the small blind. Play folded back to the original raiser and he called. McDonald also called, but the button got out of the way.

The flop came down {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and Shih bet 2,700. His middle-position opponent fired in a raise to 5,500 and McDonald folded. Shih thought for a minute and then also gave it up.

Early Pot For ElkY

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier has helped himself to a small pot early on, announcing his arrival by doing what he does best; raising the stakes.

The Frenchman was seated under the gun and he opened to 250 and the action folded all the way to Adolfo Vaeza in the small blind. He checked his cards, then double checked them before making the call. The big blind folded and it was heads-up to the {7-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} flop.

Vaeza checked to ElkY and he quickly checked behind but there was no such passivity when the {3-Spades} landed on the turn because when Vaeza checked ElkY bet 500 and he took down the hand.

Soul in the Room

Fabrice Soulier is back for more EPT action after his third place finish at EPT Campione, and he's right back where he wants to be; in the middle of the action. He's on the secondary feature table and had Jonathan Duhamel sat directly to his left. He tangled with Cengiz Ulusu and came out the better.

The two were heads up to a {2-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop and Ulusu led for 2,050. The Frenchman raised to 5,150 from early position and Ulusu called. The turn came {2-Diamonds} and Soulier bet 5,150 when he was checked to. The Israeli gave a smile and folded.
