European Legend Lodden Among Leaders After Day 1a

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Johnny Lodden
Johnny Lodden

Plenty of European legends have added their names to the lists of PokerStars European Poker Tour winners, but one man who hasn't is old-time online crusher Johnny Lodden. The Norwegian PokerStars Team Pro has come close a couple of times with top-four finishes at EPT Grand Final in 2013 and 2015, and he's building toward another possible run after bagging a big stack on Day 1a of EPT Prague Main Event.

After eight long levels of play on Day 1a, Lodden bagged 132,700 to place among the top stacks at day's end. Lodden had two starting stacks before the first break even arrived and scarcely looked back en route to his strong finish.

Though Lodden has heaps heading to Thursday's Day 2, he isn't quite at the top of the board. The man to catch is Dane Henrik Hecklen, who finished with 221,800. Hecklen has made his bacon in recent years in some of the bigger field, lower buy-in events that accompany PokerStars EPT events. He won an Estrellas €2,200 High Roller in 2014 for €293,000 and has over $1 million in total cashes.

Others to bag big included Thomas Muehloecker (151,000), Tony Dunst (129,500) and Pascal Lefrancois (114,900). Anthony Zinno, Daniel Dvoress, Sergio Aido, Juha Helppi, and €50,000 Super High Roller runner-up Charlie Carrel were also among the 117 survivors. Overall, 246 players entered the first flight of the final EPT Main Event, and plenty more will assuredly join them for Wednesday's Day 1b.

Some of the players who busted out on Day 1a and are therefore out of the running to take the final EPT crown include Justin Bonomo, Rainer Kempe, Sam Greenwood, Davidi Kitai, Isaac Haxton, Steve O'Dwyer, Kenny Hallaert, Vojtech Ruzicka, and PokerStars Team Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier.

O'Dwyer couldn't get much going and busted just before bagging time when he his flopped set of eights was not good enough against the turned set of jacks of Romain Lewis. ElkY also busted with eights, putting his last 15 big blinds in and having an opponent pick up nines behind him. The famed Frenchman has had a tough couple of days as he bubbled the €50,000 Super High Roller on Monday night.

Day 1b gets underway at noon Wednesday and should see a big crowd fill the Hilton Hotel Prague. Come back to PokerNews for more live coverage.

Dunst Scores Full Double Through Kabrhel

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Tony Dunst
Tony Dunst

In the cutoff, Martin Kabrhel raised to 2,000 and Tony Dunst three-bet to 6,000 from one seat over, Kabrhel called. The flop came {A-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Kabrhel check-called a first continuation bet of 4,500 before doing so again on the {A-Clubs} turn for 8,500.

Kabrhel then checked for a third time on the {2-Spades} river and Dunst moved all in. Kabrhel asked for a count and the shove was for 29,600 in total. "Too much. Why don't you speak to me? You don't like me?" Kabrhel asked while Dunst didn't say a word.

Several minutes passed and the clock was called. The one minute of consideration ran down until the very last second and Kabrhel then called. Dunst rolled over {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} for trips aces and Kabrhel mucked, but since it was an all in showdown the {Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} was exposed.

Haxton no More

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

A short-stacked Isaac Haxton defended his big blind against a 1,400-raise by EPT10 Vienna champion Oleksii Khoroshenin and check-raised all in for his last 3,000 on the {A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop. Khoroshenin quickly called with {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Haxton showed {Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

The American was drawing dead on the {3-Hearts} turn, making the {A-Spades} river meaningless. Haxton grabbed his belongings and will most likely be back in action tomorrow for the €25,500 Single-Day High Roller.

Tuna Busts Salter with a Huge Call

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Jack Salter
Jack Salter

After a raise by Akin Tuna and a call by Dejuante Alexander, Jack Salter three-bet to 4,500 on the button. Both Tuna and Alexander called and the flop came {Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. The action checked to Salter and he continued for 4,800, only Tuna called.

The {3-Clubs} came on the turn and Tuna checked. Salter shoved for 23,600 and Tuna spent almost five minutes in the think tank before calling.

Jack Salter: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Akin Tuna: {J-Spades}{8-Hearts}

The {5-Spades} on the river was a blank and the entire table applauded to the big hero call by Tuna, who knocked out Salter.

Moments after finishing runner-up in the Super High Roller, Charlie Carrel wasted no time before hopping in the Main Event. A number of other participants in that nosebleed event have also hopped in, including European legend and PokerStars Team Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier.

Rough Day for Newey

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Paul Newey
Paul Newey

Paul Newey had high hopes to grab an EPT Super High Roller title, and those were dashed with his elimination from that event at the final table. He fared no better in taking a fast exit from the Main Event, having already busted out less than an hour after we saw him seated.

Joining Newey on the rail is Justin Bonomo, as the American pro had been short early and looks to be out as well.

Monster Three-Way All In Sees One Bust

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Alexandros Kolonias
Alexandros Kolonias

Action went nuts on a flop of {6-Clubs}{7-Spades}{9-Hearts}, and while we didn't watch the sequence, the end result was three players all in. Alexandros Kolonias had {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} in the big blind, Nikolaos Iliakis had flopped top set with {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} in the cutoff, and a player on the button was drawing with {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}. The turn and river were both queens, and Iliakis scooped the main pot with a boat while Kolonias pulled in a sizable enough side pot that he's still above the starting stack.

Welcome to Day 1a of the 2016 PokerStars EPT Prague Main Event

Prague Old Town Square
Prague Old Town Square

Welcome to Day 1a of the 2016 PokerStars EPT Prague Main Event. History is in the making as this will be the final EPT in its 13 season history with the advent of the PokerStars Championship and PokerStars Festival events.

It is fitting that the last EPT takes place in Prague, where it has been ever-present on the EPT since making its debut during the tour's fourth season. Arnaud Matter won the inaugural EPT Prague Main Event in Season 4 after outlasting a field of 555 to get his hands on the winner's trophy and €708,400.

Last year in Prague, Hossein Ensan bested a field of almost double the size of 1,044 entrants to capture the tournament's top prize of €754,510. However, this wasn't the biggest win for an EPT Prague Main Event, which took place the year before when in 2014 Stephen Graner navigated through a field of 1,107 players to win €969,000.

Play commences at 12 p.m. local time and ends around midnight after the completion of eight levels of 75-minutes each. A 20-minute break is scheduled after every second level, with a 75-minute dinner break at the end of the sixth level.

A second opening day with the same structure will take place on Dec. 13 followed by Days 2-6 from Dec. 14-19.

Also taking place today are the final tables of the €1,100 Eureka Main Event and the €50,000 Super High Roller, while the €2,200 Eureka High Roller, which was originally advertised as a two-day event will play down to a final one to two tables. PokerNews will be on hand today for live coverage for both the conclusion of the EPT Super High Roller and the EPT Prague Main Event.

With the final EPT Main Event winner to claim the trophy will take place in less than a week, PokerNews recapped the 13 year history of the tour. Part One of the retrospective focused on the early years in Seasons 1 through 5, Part Two focused on the Berlin robbery, the effects of Black Friday and the "mega-schedule" and Part Three will focus on the later years in Seasons 9 through 13 when the number of venues was reduced with each offering more events, along with some general stats about the venues and EPT winners.
