Armin Mette Leads 300 Players After Day 1b of the €5,300 EPT Main Event

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Day 1b of the €5,300 EPT Main Event at the 2018 PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague held at the Hilton Prague is in the books. A total of 785 players registered for the flight, including 109 reentries. Only about 300 of them are left after 10 one-hour levels of play. The chip lead is for Armin Mette. The Austrian bagged 280,000 and sits in second place overall, behind Day 1a chip leader John Sarailis with 297,400.

Mette is closely followed by Aku Joentausta (276,600), Arthur Conan (275,000), and Simon Pedersen 265,400. Pedersen once won a €1,100 side event at EPT10 Vienna for €73,750 and is now looking for more success at the European Poker Tour.

The day started with about 300 players already registered for the tournament, but registration is still open until the start of Day 2. Plenty of big names started the day, but they didn't make it through to Day 2. The 2016 EPT Prague Main Event champion Jasper Meijer van Putten was one of those players. Others who didn't make it include Vojtech Ruzicka, Andy Hills, Davidi Kitai and PokerStars Team Pro members Maria Konnikova, Jaime Staples and Jake Cody.

Fatima Moreira de Melo (30,700) and Muskan Sethi (27,500) are still waving the flag for PokerStars Team Pro. Both made it through with about the stack they started the day with, but they will have plenty of room to play tomorrow as the first level will be 800/1,600 with a 1,600 big blind ante. More players that made it through to Day 2 include Sylvain Loosli (162,800), Alex Papazian (113,300), Dietrich Fast (85,200), Anton Wigg (79,000) and Jason Wheeler (62,500).

The tournament will continue with Day 2 on Friday starting at 12 p.m. local time. Levels will be 90 minutes from Day 2 onwards and they will play five levels on Day 2 with a break after every level. Stay tuned to PokerNews to follow updates from the €5,300 EPT Main Event at the Hilton Prague.

Cody Eliminated

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

Martynas Vitkauskas raised from early position to 2,800 and Jake Cody three-bet to 8,100. Vitkauskas moved all in for 43,200 and Cody called.

Cody was playing {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} but he was behind against the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} of Vitkauskas. The board fell {3-Hearts}{K-Spades}{5-Clubs}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Cody was left with just 5,500.

A couple of hands later he lost his last 5,500 with {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts} against the {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} of Vitkauskas. The board landed {3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Clubs}{J-Spades}{K-Clubs} and Cody was officially out of the Main Event.

Boski Eliminated by Wigg After Long Tank

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Aleksander Da Silva Boski in an earlier event
Aleksander Da Silva Boski in an earlier event

The complete board was {7-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and Anton Wigg had put his opponent, Aleksander Da Silva Boski, all in. The pot had about 20,000 in it and Wigg had Boski covered. Boski had about 23,000 behind and he thought about it for multiple minutes.

''My heart tells me call'' said Boski out loud before staying silent for another couple minutes. The clock was eventually called on him and when he had five seconds left he called.

Wigg immediately opened up {7-Spades}{5-Diamonds} for a full house. Boski stood up from his chair and threw his {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts} across the table. Seconds later he apologized to the table and exited the tournament area.

Konnikova Eliminated

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Maria Konnikova
Maria Konnikova

Maria Konnikova, on her second shell, was picking up her stuff and wishing everyone good luck when we got to her table. The board was ten-high and an opponent's aces were face up with Konnikova's card already in the muck.

"Less than 20 bigs behind, what can I do?" she asked as she headed for the doors.

A player at the table told us she had flopped top pair with {10-}{8-} defending the big blind and ran into the blades.

Sow Bests Panyak Then Busts Another Foe

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Kalidou Sow
Kalidou Sow

Kalidou Sow called on the button when Maxim Panyak opened in the hijack and then called a continuation-bet on the {5-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop. Panyak checked the {10-Diamonds} turn and called 4,200 from Sow. Both players checked the {j-Hearts} and Panyak showed {k-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for a missed flush, with Sow taking the pot with {7-Spades}{6-Spades}.

The next hand, Sow raised in the cutoff and an opponent in the big blind defended. That player led out for 1,100 on the {7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop and Sow made it 3,300. They went to the turn, which was the {2-Clubs}. The big blind check-called 5,100 and the river was a {3-Hearts}. The big blind checked and Sow set him in for about 19,000.

After about 30 seconds and some shrugging, the big blind slammed in his chips but his {9-}{8-} was no match for Sow's {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}.

Staples Coolered

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Jaime Staples, pictured in an earlier event.
Jaime Staples, pictured in an earlier event.

Jaime Staples opened for 800 in middle position and got calls from the cutoff and small blind. Action checked to the cutoff on {8-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and he bet 1,500. Julien Pieffet called, as did Staples. The {10-Spades} turn got checked through and the river was a {5-Hearts}. Pieffet checked and Staples bet 5,500. The cutoff mucked but Pieffet shoved all in for 18,800.

This caused Staples to put his head in his hands but he called in short order.

"Flush," Pieffet said, showing {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for the nuts.

Staples revealed he also had a flush and a strong one: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}.

Meijer van Putten With a Double Barrel

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Jasper Meijer van Putten
Jasper Meijer van Putten

It folded around to Jasper Meijer van Putten on the button and he raised to 600. Small blind Valentin Cristea called and the big blind folded.

The flop fell {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and Cristea check-called another bet of 600 from Meijer van Putten to see the {6-Diamonds} turn. The Dutch 2016 EPT Prague Main Event champion put in a bet of 1,400 after Cristea checked to him and they saw the {7-Hearts} come off the deck.

Both players checked this time and Cristea showed down {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} which was enough to make Meijer van Putten muck his hand.

Welcome to Day 1b of 2018 EPT Prague €5,300 Main Event

EPT Prague Day1a
EPT Prague Day1a

PokerStars EPT Prague €5,300 Main Event got rolling on Wednesday with Day 1a, and now it's time for the second and final starting flights, Day 1b.

With a turnout of over 370 entries on Day 1a, a huge field may be in the offing as the tournament is well ahead of pace compared to 2017, when this event was under the PokerStars Championship banner. Another strong turnout should be on the way for Day 1b.

Just like Day 1a, Day 1b will see 10 levels played, each lasting an hour apiece. A dinner break will be given after the sixth level. Players begin with 30,000 in their stacks at 100/100 and progress up to 600/1,200/1,200 by the end of the night. Each player is permitted two total entries regardless of Day 1 flight, so eliminated players may reenter if they didn't fire on Day 1a.

Cards are scheduled to be in the air at noon local time here at Hilton Prague. Stay tuned to this space to see who joins the likes of Patrik Antonius, Niall Farrell, Parker Talbot, Andras Nemeth and Norbert Szecsi in good position heading into Friday's Day 2.
