Armstrong and Brandt Both Miss, Neither Go For It

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Lawrence Edward Brandt
Lawrence Edward Brandt

Ian Armstrong was in the big blind in a heads-up pot against under-the-gun player Lawrence Brandt on a board of {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

Armstrong checked on the flop and Brandt checked back. The turn brought the {j-Hearts} and Armstrong led out for 4,000. Brandt responded with a raise to 11,000 and Brandt called.

The river brought the {a-Diamonds} and Brandt checked. Armstrong checked back, leading Brandt to reveal {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a missed nut flush draw that ended up being top pair. That led Armstrong to turn over {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, showing that he also had the nut flush draw and, like his opponent, backed into top pair to chop the pot.

"If you were both executed for gambling, they'd have killed innocent men," remarked Victoria Coren Mitchell from across the table.

Ensan Eliminated by Bucinskas

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Hossein Ensan
Hossein Ensan

Hossein Ensan had three-bet all in for around 14,000. Darius Bucinskas had raised and the original raiser folded.

Ensan playfully leaned over to Bucinskas who was sat to his direct left and peeled one of the Australian's cards playfully before all cards were exposed.

Hossein Ensan: {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Darius Bucinskas: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

There was a brief hope of a chop on the {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{j-Spades}{k-Clubs} runout but Ensan was eliminated.

"Second bullet best bullet," said tablemate Bjorn Bruns.

"Tomorrow," replied Ensan.

Two-Time EPT Main Event Champ Eliminated After Getting Aces Cracked

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Victoria Coren Mitchell
Victoria Coren Mitchell

Victoria Coren Mitchell opened to 2,000 from early position and Lawrence Brandt defended out of the big blind. Before he called, the {8-Spades} was exposed as a player folded their hand.

The flop landed {8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Brandt checked. Mitchell bet 2,000 and Brandt check-raised to 5,400.

"Check-raise?! Why did you do that?! Is it me?" Mitchell asked before calling.

The turn brought the {3-Spades} and Brandt put out a stack of blue 5,000-denomination chips to put Mitchell all in. She quickly called off with around 25,000.

Victoria Coren Mitchell: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Lawrence Brandt: {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Despite there being one less eight in the deck, Brandt had flopped a straight to have Mitchell drawing dead with her pocket aces headed to the {2-Spades} river to eliminate the two-time EPT Main Event champion, who first took down 2006 EPT London Main Event for £500,000 and later 2014 EPT Sanremo Main Event for €476,100.

"Hard for me to fold that," the two-time champ turned BBC presenter said as she left the tournament area.

Jorstad Another Elimination

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Espen Jorstad
Espen Jorstad

The seat previously occupied by another player was now filled with someone different and Kevin Allen filled us in on what happened. Allen had opened from under the gun and got two callers.

Anthony Kennedy was in the small blind and moved all in. Espen Jorstad called off for his stack and the remaining players folded.

Jorstad held {a-}{k-} but failed to overcome the {6-}{6-} of Kennedy and he was eliminated.

"Very sad, we are out of the tournament," he told his Instagram followers. "I had a lot but I then played a big squeeze spot with {a-}{q-} [...] I lost a big one there. Then we had 110,000 pot flip with ace-king against pocket sixes and then brick, brick, brick...

"Gonna come back tomorrow and try for Day 1b."

On a {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} board Kenny Hallaert checked out of the small blind and Balakrishna Reddy Patur bet 2,000 from the button. Hallaert called.

The two players checked the {3-Diamonds} turn and {5-Hearts} river and Hallaert showed {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and took down the pot.

Balakrishna Patur Bags Big After EPT London Main Event Day 1a Field; Coren Mitchell Busts After Aces Cracked

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Balakrishna Patur

The first PokerStars European Poker Tour London Main Event in over eight years got underway at the Hilton Park Lane today, with 262 players joining the first of two starting flights.

The Day 1a field was whittled down to just 83 players over the course of ten levels, with Luis Pinho ending the day as chip leader with 260,000.

He leads Balakrishna Patur (233,500) and Sergio Coutinho at the top of the counts, with EPT regular Ognyan Dimov also bagging a top-five stack ahead of Day 2.

Patur thought he'd grabbed the overnight chip lead for himself after winning a healthy pot in the last hand of the night, and said that he'd enjoyed himself at the tables.

Other notables who bagged healthy stacks included Roland Rokita (197,500) and Anton Wigg (175,000).

Day 1a Recap

Plenty of familiar faces were in action on Day 1a including British players Jamie Nixon, Guy Taylor, Tom Middleton, Jack Sinclair and Barny Boatman, but there were plenty of international stars joining the field such as Kenny Hallaert, Paulina Loeliger, Joao Vieira and WSOP Main Event champion Espen Jorstad.

Victoria Coren
Victoria Coren

Several of these managed to survive through to Day 2, but it wasn't such a good day for former EPT London champion Victoria Coren Mitchell who survived until the eighth level of the day before being eliminated holding pocket aces by Lawrence Brandt, fresh from securing his first cash on English soil in the UKIPT Main Event.

During the latter stages several High Roller regulars joined the field including Ben Heath, Daniel Dvoress and Timothy Adams — all of which secured a place in Day 2 at the first opportunity.

The second starting flight in the EPT London Main Event starts at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23. Just like today, they will play ten 60-minute levels with 20-minute breaks every two levels. There will be a 75-minute dinner break after Level 6.

Any player who has not played yet, or any player who has busted and is yet to re-enter, can join the field before late registration closes at the start of Day 2.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for all the action from the EPT London festival.
