Welcome to Day 1a of the 2022 PokerStars EPT Prague €5,300 Main Event

Grzegorz Glowny
Grzegorz Glowny

At noon local time the crown jewel of the annual pre-Christmas live poker festival in the heart of Europe gets underway. Day 1a of the 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague €5,300 Main Event will see poker enthusiasts from near and far join the action at the Hilton Hotel in Prague and a potential record for the stop in Prague may very well be on the horizon.

The Eureka Main Event once more set a record attendance and it wouldn't be a surprise if the flagship tournament does so as well in the next two days. It is the second time the EPT Prague €5,300 Main Event takes place after the rescheduled sop from December 2021 was moved to the Spring. Back then, PokerStars online qualifier Grzegorz Glowny came out on top of an 1,190 entry strong field after he defeated Andrea Cortellazzi in heads-up play to claim the biggest slice of the €5,771,500 prize pool.

Prior to that in December 2019, the very same tournament drew a field of 1,154 entries and Mikalai Pobal emerged as the winner. He earned a top prize of €1,118,277 and was also only the second player in the history of the EPT to win two Main Events, following in the footsteps of Victoria Coren Mitchell.

Other previous winners here in Prague include Paul Michaelis, Salvatore Bonavena, Arnaud Mattern, Roberto Romanello, Martin Finger, Hossein Ensan, and Jasper Meijer van Putten. Frenchman Kalidou Sow claimed the one and only PokerStars Championship Prague title and later on became an ambassador for the renowned poker operator.

All participants receive 30,000 in chips and will aim to make it through the entire ten levels of 60 minutes each. There is a scheduled 15-minute break every two levels and a 75-minute dinner break after level six. The late registration period for the 2022 EPT Prague €5,300 Main Event remains open until the start of Day 2 on December 14, 2022, and a maximum of two entries per player are allowed.

Even the snow has returned to Prague as well ahead of the first of two starting days. Follow along with PokerNews all day long and throughout the entire festival as the live poker year 2022 ends with a bang.

Three ways to the {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} turn, Robin Scheidegger in the small blind checked. Elias Abou Saleh then bet 900 and Levan Rcheulishvili called on the button. Scheidegger check-raised to 3,600 and Abou Saleh folded while Rcheulishvili called.

The {10-Hearts} fell on the river and Scheidegger checked after double-checking his cards. Rcheulishvili now bet 5,300 and his opponent folded with exposing the {k-Hearts} face-up.

Uri Gilboa

Three ways to a flop of {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, Ivan Banic checked out of the big blind. Uri Gilboa bet 1,100 from under the gun and Pasquale Braco raised to 2,800 from the next seat. Banic quickly folded and Gilboa called. After the {k-Spades} turn, Gilboa check-called for 5,200 to then also check the {6-Spades} on the river.

Braco now bet 12,200 and Gilboa counted his chips before sending the cards into the muck.

Bohdanov Calls Correctly with a Mighty Pair

Renat Bohdanov
Renat Bohdanov

On the river of a {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} board in the last hand before the break, Jan Bednar fired a bet worth 15,000 for most of his stack. That was roughly the size of the pot as bets of 3,700 had been pulled into the middle after preflop action already.

Renat Bohdanov mulled it over for a few seconds only and then called. Bednar exposed the {q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a busted gutshot and Bohdanov won the pot with the {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} for nines and fours before they headed to the rail.

Cutri Gambles and It Pays Off

Level 3 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Luciano Cutri
Luciano Cutri

Luciano opened from the cutoff before Boris Kuzmanovic three-bet the button to 1,600. In the small blind, Ivan Bryskin moved all in for 8,000. He would be getting action.

Cutri made the call that represented half his remaining stack. Back on Kuzmanovic, he moved in enough to cover Cutri's remaining stack. Cutri thought for a while before committing his full stack of 16,000. The three were heading to a runout for all the chips.

Ivan Bryskin: {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Luciano Cutri: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}
Boris Kuzmanovic: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

Kuzmanovic had the goods, but Cutri had a pretty ace-cracking hand. They did just that on the {j-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{q-Spades} board, flopping trips to win it all.

Cutri started celebrating and shouting in Italian when he saw the lucky flop.

"English, please," joked Bryskin as he stood up to exit.

"English, what is this English," replied Cutri while continuing his celebration.

Roussey Busts Grossmann and Peffly

Level 3 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Alex Peffly
Alex Peffly

On the river of a {7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} board, Lukasz Szymon Grossmann checked with a shorter stack behind. Quentin Roussey then pushed all-in and Grossmann reluctantly called to get shown the {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for an overpair. Grossmann exposed {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} and headed out of the tournament area.

Shortly after, he was involved in another larger pot and bet the {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop before calling the shove by Alex Peffly for 15,200.

Alex Peffly: {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Quentin Roussey: {q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The {9-Diamonds} turn improved Roussey to a pair and the {4-Spades} river sent Peffly to the rail, who could all but smile.

"I kinda misread your stack, guess I could have asked," Roussey admitted in table chat.

Drozd Drills One Outer to Crush Marletta's Aces

Level 3 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Aces, Kings, Ace-King Cooler
Aces, Kings, Ace-King Cooler

Three players played a massive, all-in pot. All the chips got in the middle preflop and roars were heard across the room.

Giorgio Marletta, Leonidas Androutsos, and Ondrej Drozd were the three players involved. All three had monsters.

Giorgio Marletta: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Leonidas Androutsos: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Ondrej Drozd: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Marletta couldn't have hoped for a much better spot, having both opponents drawing very thin. He looked great on the {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop. The {2-Hearts} was a safe turn. The river caused all the commotion, though, when the one outer {k-Hearts} hit the board. Drozd came from way behind to win the massive pot, send Marletta out the door, and leave Androutsos with crumbs.

Sitbon Soars to a Big Stack

Level 3 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Julien Sitbon
Julien Sitbon

Valerii Kalynych check-called a bet worth 15,000 on a completed board of {6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} river while in the big blind. Julien Sitbon tabled the {5-Clubs}{2-Clubs} from an early position and Kalynych mucked his {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs} with a lot of frustration.

One hand later, Sitbon opened to 800 and called a three-bet to 2,300 by Luciano Cutri. On the {9-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop, Sitbon check-called for 5,000 and the {8-Clubs} turn was checked. Following the {2-Diamonds} river, Sitbon bet 7,000 and Cutri paid that off. Sitbon exposed {9-Spades}{8-Spades} for nines and eights to win the pot.

Ylitalo Busts Soering

Level 4 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Robin Ylitalo
Robin Ylitalo

With 7,200 each invested to the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop, Robin Ylitalo bet for what appeared to be 4,500 in the hijack. Hendriekus Soering then pushed all-in for 16,800 and Ylitalo reluctantly called.

Hendriekus Soering: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Robin Ylitalo: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The {8-Hearts} turn made a split pot likely but the {k-Diamonds} river restored the preflop and flop order, as Ylitalo made kings and tens to score the knockout.
