Lee Leads 117 Players After Day 2 of €5,300 EPT Prague Main Event

Level 16 : Blinds 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jaesung Lee
Jaesung Lee

It's been a record-breaking festival at the 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague being held at the Hilton Hotel Prague and that trend continued on Day 2 when late registration closed for the €5,300 EPT Prague Main Event. A total of 1,267 entries were recorded before the action began on Day 2 and just 117 players remain after a full 12 hours of poker.

Bursting through to the top of the leaderboard was Jaesung Lee who bagged up a monstrous stack of 1,132,000, the only player to end the day in the seven-figure category. Lee started to emerge as one of the big stacks in the early levels and continued an upward trend throughout the day, including doing his part to burst the money bubble.

Lee managed to pick off a bluff from Yulian Bogdanov in order to double up and position himself well for the money bubble that was quickly approaching. On the bubble, Lee got involved in a heavily weighted side pot with fellow big stack Robert Cowen. The Korean flopped a set of tens in a four-bet pot and cracked the pocket aces of his opponent while eliminating one of the short stacks to push the field into the money.

Lee, who doesn't have many live tournament scores recorded on his resume, has already locked up the largest of his career heading into Day 3. This will be his first five-figure result but he is hoping to turn that into even more as the following days progress.

There are two PokerStars ambassadors remaining in the field heading to Day 3 and they currently sit on opposite ends of the chip counts. Parker Talbot finished the night at the feature table and put 960,000 chips into the bag, good enough for second place. Ramon Colillas is the other ambassador but will be heading into Day 3 as one of the short stacks with just 62,000 chips.

Day 2 Action

There were 397 players that returned to their seats from Day 1a/b and they were joined by 40 late entries who started the day with a fresh stack of 30,000 chips. A total of 918 unique entries were recorded along with 349 re-entries, bringing the total to 1,267 entries that created a prizepool of €6,144,950.

The action was fast and furious right from the start with over 100 players being eliminated in the opening level. Some of the notables that fell by the wayside in the early going included PokerStars ambassadors Sam Grafton, Alejandro Lococo, and Benjamin Spragg. While the money bubble wasn't expected to burst until the end of Day 2, it actually happened rather painlessly before the dinner break.

Upon returning for the fifth level of the day, the field was just three eliminations away from bursting the bubble. On the very first hand, three players were eliminated including Saar Wilf, Felix Weis, and Auez Yeltubayev. Without even having to go hand-for-hand, the field broke into the money and the remaining 183 players were all guaranteed a min-cash of €8,550.

Over the course of the final two levels on the day, many of the short stacks were forced to the payout desk including Jason Wheeler, Cowen, Sam Greenwood, Pablo Brito Silva, and Julien Sitbon. Heading into Day 3, the final 117 players have locked up €11,450 but will have their sights set on the first-place prize of €1,054,500 and the infamous EPT trophy.

Some familiar faces to keep an eye on going forward include Javier Gomez Zapatero (891,000), Timothy Adams (759,000), Jerry Odeen (654,000), Conor Beresford (523,000), Gaelle Baumann (401,000), Juan Pardo (188,000), and Mike Watson (158,000).

The action is scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m. local time tomorrow for Day 3 with another 5 or 6 levels expected to be played. The players will be returning to level 17 with the blinds at 3,000/6,000 and a 6,000 big blind ante. The levels will continue to be 90 minutes in length but the 30-second shot clock will be put into play at the start of Day 3.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the live updates from another thrilling day at the EPT Prague festival.

Ace on the River for Boat Over Boat

Level 16 : Blinds 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Erwann Pecheux
Erwann Pecheux

Action picked up on the river in a heads-up pot with 150,000 in the middle. The full board showed {8-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{a-Spades}.

Out of position, Valeriano Toledano checked the final street after the {a-Spades} landed. On his left, Erwann Pecheux moved all in for 104,000. Toledano snap-called and hands were tabled.

Pecheux showed {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} for the rivered full house. That was better than the flopped full house of {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} Toledano had in his hand for the losing end of the late-night cooler.

Gaelle Baumann: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades} and the kings of Baumann held up to eliminate Menger.

Action folded around to Gaelle Baumann who opened the cutoff to 8,000, Daniel Menger folded the button and Juan Pardo three-bet to 30,000 from the small blind. After the big blind has folded Baumann called and the players went to the streets.

On the {j-Hearts}{7-Spades}{10-Spades} flop Pardo continued the aggression and led out for 39,000. Baumann sized up Pardo for a few moments before sliding out three stacks of chips and reraising all in. Pardo folded quickly and Baumann took down the pot.

Crazy Eights as Grieco Coolers Cowen

Level 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Nicola Grieco
Nicola Grieco

Action arrived on the turn with two players having just got all the chips in the middle. The board showed {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. Robert Cowen in the big blind and Nicola Grieco in the cutoff were the players with their chips in the pot and Cowen was at risk with a slightly smaller stack. The pot held over 600,000 up for grabs.

Robert Cowen: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Nicola Grieco: {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

Grieco had Cowen dominated with better trips, but needed a clean river to finish the job. The {q-Spades} hit the river, both players ended up with trips, but Grieco's kicker played, so Cowen was headed out the door.

Three Eliminations at Once Burst the Bubble

Level 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Saar Wilf
Saar Wilf

Auez Yelyubayev was forced all in for 1,000 in the big blind and Robert Cowen raised to 8,000 in early position. Jaesung Lee three-bet to 20,000 on his left and the action folded back to Cowen who four-bet to 58,000. Lee called and they went heads-up on the side pot to a flop of {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

Both players checked and the {3-Diamonds} landed on the turn. Cowen check-called a bet of 40,000 from Lee and the {6-Hearts} peeled off on the river. Both players checked again and Cowen tabled {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}. Lee held {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a set of tens to claim the side pot and he also got the main pot when Yelyubayev showed {q-}{10-}.

At the table next door, Saar Wilf raised it up from under the gun and Lader Lijo three-bet all in from the big blind. Wilf instantly called and the hands were tabled.

Saar Wilf: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Lander Lijo: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The board ran out {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and Lijo spiked a set of queens on the river to also eliminate Wilf. With two eliminations occurring at the same time, the tournament dealers were told to hold up after the hand.

While play was paused at all tables, Felix Weis was also eliminated, bringing the field down to just 183 entries. When the action was completed at all of the tables, it was announced that the remaining 183 players all locked up a min-cash of €8,550.

Battle of the Big Stacks

Level 14 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jaesung Lee
Jaesung Lee

Robert Cowen opened to 6,000 from the cutoff and was three-bet to 20,000 by Jaesung Lee on the button and Cowen called.

Cowen check-called Lee's bet of 13,000 on the {a-Hearts}{8-Spades}{q-Spades} flop and the two big stacks took to the {q-Hearts} turn. Cowen checked again and Lee sized up betting 45,000 only for Cowen to fold.

Lee jested "I never bluff!" flashing {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} as he raked in another pot and is now one of biggest stacks in the room.

Grieco Busts Bohdanov and D'Angelo in Consecutive Hands

Level 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Daniele D'Angelo
Daniele D'Angelo

With bets of 10,500 and 18,000 already pulled in until the {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} turn, Nicola Grieco checked and Renat Bohdanov moved all-in for the last 26,500. Grieco was deep in the tank for more than four minutes as he vaulted out of the chair and studied the board very carefully. The clock was called on him and Grieco called with three seconds left.

Renat Bohdanov: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Nicola Grieco: {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Grieco was trailing but spiked the {j-Clubs} on the river to burst out in a rather timid celebration in his native language.

One hand later, Grieco used his standard opening size of 10,000 - four big blinds - once more. Daniele D'Angelo pushed all-in and already stood up, joked "I need a lot of luck against this guy". The dealer told D'Angelo to sit back down and once it folded back to Grieco, he snap-called.

Daniele D'Angelo: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}
Nicola Grieco: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

This time, Grieco had the best of it and made a set on the {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{5-Clubs} runout to send the next opponent to the rail.

Lee Doubles Through Bogdanov in Massive Pot

Level 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Jaesung Lee
Jaesung Lee

Robert Cowen raised to 5,000 and was called by Jaesung Lee from one seat over on the button. Yulian Bogdanov then tree-bet to 27,500 in the big blind and Cowen folded while Lee called. The {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop saw a bet of 15,500 by Bogdanov and a call before the Bulgarian fired a hefty 70,000 on the {2-Hearts} turn.

Lee called once again and that led them to the {3-Hearts} on the river. Bogdanov motioned to see the stack of his opponent before he pushed all-in. Lee had more than the current average behind and quickly called to get shown the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} by Bogdanov, which he had beat holding the {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.
