De Luca Bets Big on the River, Forces Fold from Holtzman

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante

Stylianos Kollatos opened for 300 from the cutoff and Guy Holtzman, from the small blind, three-bet to 1,500. Sergio Gustavo De Luca cold-called from the big blind and Kollatos folded.

The flop came {5-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Holtzman continued for 2,500. De Luca called right away.

The turn brought the {6-Diamonds}, putting a four-card straight on the board in addition to the existing flush draw. Holtzman once again fired, this time for 5,000. De Luca quickly called once more.

On the {9-Spades} river, Holtzman avoided a third barrel and checked his option. De Luca briefly thought before putting two blue chips out there, symbolizing 10,000 of his remaining 17,500 chips.

Holtzman put two blue chips to the side and repeatedly counted out the chips that would remain should he lose the hand, contemplating for just under a minute. Eventually, he opted against calling and tossed his cards into the muck.

De Luca would graciously accept the pot and return to just above starting stack.

PokerNews joined the action with roughly 10,000 in the middle on a {5-Spades}{a-Clubs}{2-Spades}{9-Spades}{9-Hearts} board and Arvin Vahdat had made it 6,000 from the cutoff.

Nicholas van Bemmel, from the button, pondered his decision for well over a minute before finally tossing his cards into the muck.

With that, Vahdat has already taken his 30,000 starting stack to over 35,000 in the day's first level.

Vagianos Scores Nice Early Pot vs. Alvarez

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante

There was already 3,300 in the pot with the board reading {7-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} when PokerNews arrived at the table.

With the table playing three-handed, Emmanouil Vagianos, from the big blind, put out a bet of 2,500. Alberto Petite Alvarez called from the button.

The river brought the {j-Hearts} and Vagianos continued for 3,500. About 15 seconds went by before Alvarez turned to his right and looked at Vagianos, sitting directly next to him. They both couldn't help themselves and shared a light chuckle before Alvarez threw his hand away.

Vagianos flashed the {j-Clubs} and took down a nice early pot.

The Estrellas Poker Tour is back in the beautiful city of Barcelona for the first time since 2016 as they take part in the PokerStars and Barcelona©Casino European Poker Tour festival.

The second flight of the Main Event tournament, Day 1b, will kick off at 6 p.m. local time.

It's worth remembering that the last time the €1,100 Main Event was held in Barcelona, Frenchman Mohamed Samri was the champion, conquering a record field of 4,682 players to take home the €353,220 first prize. Other past winners include Argentines Mario Javier Lopez and Matias Ruzzi, as well as German Soenke Jahn.

While the 2016 version of the tournament only had three starting flights, a potentially record-setting field is expected as we have arrived at the second of six starting flights that will go down inside the Casino Barcelona over the next three days. Registration for Day 1a remains open for the next few hours but at the time of publication, they've already received around 1,000 entries.

While players will still receive 30,000 chips to start their tournament, Day 1b is a turbo flight, meaning levels have been reduced from the 40 minutes players experienced in Day 1a to 30 minutes. The flight will conclude when they play down to 15% of the field and all players who survive to Day 2 will make the money. will pick up at the earliest level from the Day 1 flights.

With players allowed two entries per flight, players can potentially register a total of 12 times, giving great odds for this tournament to push past 2019's record prize pool of €3,343,590.
