It took a little over 17 full levels of play for Day 1a of the €1,100 Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event here at the 2022 PokerStars and Barcelona©Casino European Poker Tour to reach its conclusion for the day. The first of six starting flights drew 812 entrants with play scheduled to go until the field reached 15 percent of its overall total, and that number of 121 was reached with 37:44 remaining in Level 18 (4,000/8,000/8,000).

Play was loaded with action all day long and well into the evening until the final hour of the night when the pace slowed down due to the pending money bubble. Several large stacks were visible throughout the room and it seemed as if there could be any one of a handful of players to emerge atop the counts when chips went into bags. However, it was David Urban who ultimately claimed that title after finishing the day with 833,000 in chips.

Hot on his heels were Adrian Tkaczyk (615,000), Ori Elul (558,000), Motoyoshi Okamura (536,000), and rounding out the top five is Javier Fernandez (518,000). These were the only other players to finish the day with more than a half-million in chips.

Other notables to advance included Renat Bohdanov (433,000), Jason Wheeler (190,000), and Leo Margets (57,000).

Many other players were not as fortunate on the day, and with the tournament only allowing two entries per flight, those players found themselves on the rail for the event for the rest of the night. Among those who found themselves dry on chips before the day’s end included 2020 WSOP Main Event winner Damian Salas, Yuliyan Kolev, Faraz Jaka, and Kacper Pyzara.

Five more flights remain, with Day 1c commencing at noon local time on Wednesday and Day 1d following at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening with a turbo format. All yet to advance may fire once into each remaining flight to try to earn their way into Day 2, where all returning players will find themselves in the money. However, those players still have a lot of work to do as the tournament is not scheduled to play down to a winner until Day 4.

The Money Bubble Has Burst to End Day 1a

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Two tables were paused on the stone bubble with Arian Bertos Roca all in and at risk for roughly 65,000 and called Youngshin Im.

Arian Bertos Roca: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Youngshin Im: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and Roca was sent to the rail in 122nd place on the bubble.

Al-Farouk Obe was awaiting the previous hand to finish while he was all in and called by Rafael Navas. Without knowing for certain if the bubble had burst the Tournament Director came over and the hands were exposed, with Obe at risk.

Al-Farouk Obe: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Rafael Navas: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Although Obe was a favorite going in, the runout of {5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Spades} was not his friend as it gave Navas a flush to win the pot and eliminated Obe. Once the dust settled, the remaining players were advised the previous hand was the money bubble and the remaining 121 were all guaranteed a minimum cash and advance to day 2.

Players have now begun the process of bagging as Day 1a has come to a close. A full recap of the day's action will be posted shortly.

Matrai Scores a Pot Nearing Money Bubble

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

In a pot of 18,000 on a flop of {a-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, Elias Abussamra checked and Andras Matrai bet 6,000. Abussamra quickly check-raised to 20,000 which was called.

On the {4-Spades} turn both players checked their options. The {5-Hearts} completed the board and brought a straight for both players. Abussamra led out for 35,000 and without much thought, Matrai raised to 85,000. Abussamra folded and the chips were sent to Matrai with one player left before the money and end of day.

Malinov Wins Pot Close to The Money

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Atanas Malinov opened from under the gun to 12,000 and only Philip Joyce made the call in the big blind.

The flop came {j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, Joyce checked and Malinov continued for 10,000 which was called. On the {a-Spades} turn Joyce checked and Malinov went deep in the tank contemplating his option. The table eventually called the clock and Malinov then checked.

On the {7-Spades} river Joyce checked again and Malinov sat still for roughly a minute before Joyce tossed his cards in the muck to speed up the game and the pot was sent to Malinov.

Cairat Makes Big Call

Level 16 : Blinds 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Pedro Cairat
Pedro Cairat

On a completed board of {3-Clubs}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{k-Spades}, big blind Pedro Cairat checked to his opponent, Federico Macori, who was in late position.

Maconi then decided to move all in against Cairat, for the not-so-small sum of 120,500, which put Cairat in the tank.

After some deep thought, Cairat slid out calling chips and Macori tabled his hand to show {q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} for a whopping queen-high. Cairat then flipped over {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for a pair of jacks to eliminate Macori and take down the massive pot, soaring his count to 380,000.
