The PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona kicks off today at Casino Barcelona, running from August 26 to September 8. The series opens with the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour (ESPT) Main Event, returning for the third consecutive year.

The first of eight opening flights for Event #1: €1,100 Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event begins at noon local time with Day 1a.

Last year, Lucien Cohen of France emerged victorious in the largest European Poker Tour field ever, outlasting a whopping 7,398 players. He defeated Ferdinando D'Alessio in heads-up play to win the top prize of €676,230 from a massive €7,102,080 prize pool.

Players will start with 30,000 chips and the clock will be set at 40 minutes throughout the day. Late registration will remain open for the first ten levels of play, closing at the start of Level 11 (~8:55 p.m.). The day will conclude when 15 percent of the field remains, with all surviving players finishing in the money. The survivors from all eight flights will return for Day 2, starting at 11 a.m. local time on Friday, August 30.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand, providing updates until a champion is crowned on September 1.

An Early Chop Pot

The flop showed 7A5 with Liutauras Armanavicius and Marius Zidonis having checked from the blinds. Alejandro Auset Domper bet 500 from the button which only Armanavicius called.

Armanavicius check-called a bet of 1,200 from Domper on the 9 turn to see the 6 fall on the river. Armanavicius checked and Domper bet 2,000. Armanavicius snap-called and was shown A8 by Domper for a straight. Armanavicius flipped over 83 for the same straight and the two players chopped the pot.

Carrera Four-Bets; Truong Overbets River

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante

Sergio Castillo opened to 300 from the cutoff before Mikael Darwich three-bet to 1,000 from the button. Rolando Carrera put in the cold four-bet to 3,300 from the big blind and folded out both opponents.

A big pot was brewing on one table over between Toan Chan Truong and Phil Gross. With around 12,000 in the pot on the J964J board, Truong fired out 14,000 from the big blind. Gross mulled over his option in middle position before flicking in a calling chip.

Truong tabled KJ for trip jacks and Gross mucked his hand.

Sala Takes an Early Multi-Way Pot

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante

Xavier Sala raised to 300 from middle position. Barny Boatman called on the button before Francesc Xavier Guixeras Giner and Jose Cano Sanchez called out of the blinds.

Both the blinds checked the 692 flop and Sala bet 600. Boatman and Giner folded, but Sanchez stuck around with a call.

The 7 came on the turn and Sanchez check-folded to a bet of 1,700 from Sala.

Garshofsky's River Bet Takes it Down

Ivanus Cristian raised to 300 from the cutoff. Mario Niciforo called from the small blind and Mitch Garshofsky defended out of the big blind.

Niciforo and Garshofsky checked to Cristian on the 374 flop and he bet 400. Both Niciforo and Garshofsky called.

The action checked through on the 8 turn and the 6 came on the river. After Niciforo checked, Garshosky bet 800 and got two folds from his opponent.
