Defending Champion Kurganov Leads Into Day 2

Igor Kurganov
Igor Kurganov

Welcome back for Day 2 of the €25,000 High Roller at the 2013 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final. Yesterday's Day 1 saw defending champion Igor Kurganov storm out to the chip lead, and that's where he finished the day with 417,500 in chips. Behind him are Benny Spindler with 387,400 and Tony Gregg with 384,500.

Last year's field for this event drew 133 entries coming from 117 players and 16 re-entries, but this year's field has already far surpassed that with registration and re-entry open until the start of play today. Last night, the board read 150 total entries when play ended.

Outside of Kurganov, Spindler and Gregg, some of the other notables still remaining are Sorel Mizzi, Antonio Esfandiari, Alex Bilokur, Marvin Rettenmaier, Dan O'Brien and Isaac Haxton.

Once registration closes in a bit and the final numbers are received, we'll be posting them right here on PokerNews, so be sure to stay tuned. The cards will be in the air at 12 p.m. CET, so stay tuned for the action.

New Entries and Re-Entries

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Cards are in the air for Day 2 and that means that registration is closed for this event.

Zachary Clark and Fady Kamar are the only new entries for today and six players who busted yesterday have re-entered this morning. They are: Bryn Kenney, Paul Volpe, Tom Marchese, Paul Newey, Ismail Erkenov and Erik Seidel.

That takes the total entries (including re-entries) up to 157 and 70 of those remain.

The Plan for the Day

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Today will last until we have our final table of eight set or after 10 levels of play, which ever comes first. A 75-minute dinner break will be slotted in after level six.

Esfandiari Chips Up Through Fox

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Steven Silverman raised from middle position to 4,800, and Antonio Esfandiari called on the button. Action the moved to Elio Fox in the big blind, and he three-bet to 18,300. After Silverman folded, Esfandiari called.

On the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop, Fox led for 18,500. Esfandiari raised to 45,000, and Fox gave it up.

Selbst Doubles Through Sternheimer

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Team PokerStars Pro and winningest female player of all time Vanessa Selbst was all in on the {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. She was up against Philip Sternheimer's {Q-Spades}{6-Spades}.

The turn was the {K-Spades}, giving Sternheimer some extra outs to a flush, but the {K-Hearts} on the river kept Selbst in front, and she doubled up.
