Global Poker x PokerNews Cup Has Officially Reached the Finals
After nearly three weeks of poker action, the Global Poker x PokerNews Cup comes down to Sunday's Finals both for Sweeps Coins (SC) and Gold Coins (GC) participants.
On Saturday afternoon, starting at 2 p.m. PT, the Semifinals began and 72 players — 36 from the GC tournament and 36 from the SC tournament — advanced to the Finals, which kicks off at 2 p.m. PT on Sunday. There were already 18 SC players (plus 18 GC players) who automatically advanced to the finale through winning qualifying round tournaments, and that includes World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner David "RUeTama" Moses.
What's at Stake?
There are epic trophies, swag, gold coins, and sweeps coins up for grabs in the Finals. For the gold coin side, which will award a total of GC 100,000,000, the following is the main prize structure:

Three Tips for Players in the Global Poker x PokerNews Cup Quarterfinals Tonight
The Quarterfinals of the Global Poker x PokerNews Cup begin at 5:30 p.m. PT tonight. All players who will be in the field will be just three steps away from becoming a PokerNews Cup champion.
Everyone who makes it through the round will then proceed to Semifinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and those who again advance will be admitted into Sunday's Finals at 2 p.m.
Tonight's Quarterfinal round is, in most ways, just like any regular no-limit hold'em poker tournament. But there are a few things worth taking into consideration as you prepare to play that are specific for this event.
You Don't Have to Win the Tournament
Contrary to most poker tournaments, the goal tonight isn't to win the whole thing. Finishing in first place doesn't even matter. Your focus should be on surviving and advancing.
The top 90 finishers will advance to the Semifinals. So, it doesn't matter if you're down to one big blind or have 200 big blinds when the field reaches the final 90 players, you're in!
Pay Attention to Number of Players Remaining
Many tournament grinders will tell you it's pointless to constantly monitor how many players are left in the field unless you're approaching the bubble or final table. They'll tell you it's best to avoid focusing on that and instead focus on your game. In regular tournaments, that's sound advice.
But in the Quarterfinals, you aren't playing to win the tournament. You're playing to move on so that you can keep your hopes of winning the Global Poker x PokerNews Cup alive. As the field dwindles down and you're nearing 150 or so players, be mindful of your chip stack and avoid taking too many risks if you're under 30 big blinds.
Big Stacks Will Have an Advantage
Another sound piece of advice for standard tournaments is to not be so concerned with building a massive stack early on. Tournaments are long and, in most cases, you're trying to win the war, not a battle.
In the Quarterfinals, however, the players who are able to accumulate a huge stack early on will have a huge advantage as the field approaches the final 90 players. That's because they will be able to push around the smaller stacks, who will understandably be concerned with busting.
That said, playing every hand in the early stages just to try and build up a monster stack quickly probably isn't going to be a winning strategy unless you catch a heater. Play aggressively loose within reason.

The conclusion of the popular Global Poker x PokerNews Cup is nearing, and the action will be picking up this weekend both for Gold Coins (GC) and Sweeps Coins (SC) players.
Now that the qualifying rounds have completed and Global Poker is wrapping up its invitational events, this weekend will be all about determining a PokerNews Cup champion. But before that can happen, there's still some business to take care of, starting with the Quarterfinal round on Friday (April 28) beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Preparing for the Quarterfinals
Those who won qualifying round events don't have to worry about the Quarterfinals as they are already entered into the final round, which will take place on Sunday (April 30) at 5 p.m. ET. These lucky and skilled individuals earned an advantage as they can skip right through the first two rounds. But that doesn't mean a player who competes in the Quarterfinals won't end up as the PokerNews Cup champion.
The top 90 finishers in the Quarterfinals will advance to the Semifinals on Saturday (April 29) at 5 p.m. ET. From that tournament, 36 will move on to the Finals on Sunday.
So, what are they playing for? Not only are there trophies and some cool Global Poker x PokerNews Cup swag at stake. The champions will claim the biggest prize of the GC 100,000,000 or SC 250,000 guarantee.
PokerNews Cup Stats
As the series moves closer to the Finals, there are some interesting stats to share from the past two-plus weeks of play on Global Poker. Across all series Sweeps Coins tournaments, there has been 32,834 total entries (10,855 unique) and 5,000 Gold Coin tournament entries (1,632 unique).
As of Thursday, there are 14 SC finalist qualifiers already and 12 GC qualifiers. Among those who have advanced to the final round include World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner David "rUeTaMa" Moses who won PokerNews Cup Qualifier 14 - NLH Super deep - GC 4,000,000 GTD for SC 4,110.27.
