Vera Making Ground

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Phil Vera is on the uptick and looking to build more as play approaches the end of level ten.

On this hand, Chris Moneymaker opened under the gun to 2,200. Josh Smith, Mike Melkersen and Vera all called, with Vera calling from the big blind.

The flop came {j-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Vera checked. Moneymaker bet 3,500, Smith folded. Melkersen and Vera called.

The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and all three remaining players checked.

The river was the {8-Hearts} and Vera bet 8,000. Moneymaker took a moment before deciding to fold. Then Melkersen took a little bit longer, but settled on a fold as well.

On the next hand, Vera fired on an all heart flop and took that hand down as well against four players. He offered to show this hand, but the table said they didn't. Instead, they wanted to know what he held last hand.

He eventually said that he missed a straight draw and that Melkersen, who said he folded nines, would have won the hand.

Moneymaker Charging

Level 9 : 400/800, 75 ante

Chris Moneymaker is making a nice run after dinner. He already busted Jeff Chang and he just won a big pot against Phil Vera.

The two players were heads up looking at a board of {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}. Moneymaker was first to act and he bet 25,000 into a pot of about 38,000.

Vera struggled with his decision. He shuffled his chips, then counted out enough to call, then put them back atop his stack. He repeated this process for a minute or so then he made a decision. He set down his calling chips, but they would only sit for a moment before he grabbed them back and tossed them into the pot to call.

Moneymaker flipped his cards one at a time, first showing the {10-Clubs} and then {a-} for two pair. Vera held his cards in front of him, as if in disbelief. He waited for a moment then tossed his cards into the muck.

After Dinner Busts

Level 9 : 400/800, 75 ante

Jeff Chang and Mike Stonehill hit the rail shortly after returning from dinner break.

  • Chris Moneymaker eliminated Jeff Chang when Moneymaker flopped top pair with {j-}{9-} and Chang had {10-}{9-}. Chang flopped an open-ended straight draw, but didn't get there and Moneymaker was off to a quick start after dinner.
  • Scott Heiser and Mike Stonehill got all in on the turn on the hand that busted Stonehill. The flop was {5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} and Stonehill opened for 3,000. Heiser made it 8,000 and Stonehill called. The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and Stonehill checked. Heiser bet 6,000 and Stonehill shoved all in. Heiser snap called and showed a set of sevens, {7-}{7-} and Stonehill would hit the rail when his {a-}{q-} was drawing dead.

Harrison Gets Dinner Early

Level 8 : 300/600, 50 ante

Chris Moneymaker just busted another player. Craig Harrison shoved all in on a board reading {a-Spades}{6-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and Moneymaker called.

Moneymaker showed {8-Spades}{9-Spades} for a flush and Harrison mucked his hand. It was retrieved from the muck and turns over. Harrison had {a-}{4-} and was drawing dead. The river paired the board with the {7-Diamonds} and that spelled the end of the day for Harrison.
