Day 1d Completed

Shiller Surpasses 500K to Take Overall Lead into Day 2

There's a new leader in the clubhouse after the fourth and final Day 1 flight at Heartland Poker Tour Ameristar East Chicago $1,650 Main Event.

Brendan Shiller pushed toward 20 starting stacks as finished Day 1d with 518,000, besting the 497,000 of Nadya Magnus on Day 1b. Shiller, a lawyer who hails from Chicago, got ninth in this very event last year, so he'll be hungry to top that finish starting with what he no doubt hopes is a strong Day 2 on Monday.

Shiller was already running good with one of the biggest stacks in the room when he picked up aces to bust a player late and top the 500,000 mark. He kept opening pots from there and netted a few more chips before bagging time.

Second in chips was Blake Whittington with 365,000. One of the top players on the WSOP Circuit this year, Whittington snagged himself his fourth and fifth rings at the Tunica stop, including shipping the Main Event for over $150K.

Whittington played a notable massive pot late where folded out a chop after flopping the low end of a straight and barreling big on the turn and river against TK Miles, who showed his straight and mucked. Whittington obliged by showing his own straight.

Miles would also find a bag albeit with one of the shortest stacks at 51,000. Former PCA runner-up Ty Reiman was right there with him with 52,000. Others advancing included Nick Pupillo, Rich Alsup, Keven Stammen and Shawn Roberts.

The total prize pool was calculated at long last with the end of registration, coming to $820,800 with $183,899 and a $3,500 HPT Championship package to the winner. With 29 bagging Day 1d, that leaves a total of 96 runners left in the event out of 570, 63 of them to be paid.

Day 2 kicks off Monday at 11 a.m. local time. Come back to PokerNews as action rolls to the final table.

Ochana Doubles Before Buzzer

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Eddie Ochana jammed under the gun for 58,500 and action folded a couple of seats over. The player there drew a deep breath and moved all in after about 30 seconds. Everyone else folded.

Eddie Ochana: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop made Ochana's opponent swear under his breath and the {4-Spades} had him calling for a last-ditch six to salvage a chop. Instead, it was a {q-Clubs} falling to secure the double.

Every table is in the midst of dealing its final six hands.

Shiller Wakes Up With Blades

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

A player moved in for about 50,000 in middle position and Keven Stammen tanked awhile on his left and mucked. Action folded to Brendan Shiller in the small blind and he jammed to fold out the big blind.

"Terrible fold, sir," Shiller said to Stammen, showing {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}.

Stammen said he had fives.

The all-in player showed {j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. The board ran out {2-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Shiller scooped the pot. He's sitting right around 500K and has a chance to bag the overall lead.

Whittington and Miles Both Show

Blake Whittington

On a completed board of {9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}, Blake Whittington had bet 77,000 from the small blind into a pot that looked like it contained about 190,000. TK Miles was tanking under the gun.

"You have to have it," he said out loud.

He continued to mutter that under his breath as he tanked for a couple of minutes and then announced a fold after asking if Whittington would show. Miles turned over {8-Spades}{7-Spades}.

"I have the best hand?" he asked.

"No," Whittington responded, smiling. "I'll show you."

"So sick."

Whittington showed: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}.

Heidbrick Loses Track of the Clock

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Nick Pupillo opened for 7,000 under the gun, Shawn Roberts called on the button and the small blind jammed for 11,500. Big blind Amanda Heidbrick asked if action was still open and was told yes. She moved all in after some thought for about 60,000. Pupillo mucked but Roberts quickly called.

Shawn Roberts: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Small blind: {10-Spades}{6-Spades}
Amanda Heidbrick: {k-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

Heidbrick celebrated flopping two pair briefly as {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{j-Hearts} arrived but then realized Roberts had flopped a straight. The {9-Diamonds} was a brick but the {k-Spades} river gave her a full house.

"Well I couldn't just call," she reasoned. "And I only had 16 minutes left."

Someone pointed out there was still another level to go.

"Whoops," she said with a laugh.

Ochana Finds Three-Outer

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Nick Pupillo opened under the gun and Eddie Ochana jammed on his left for 26,500. Action folded to the small blind and the player there ripped to fold out everyone left in the pot.

Eddie Ochana: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

Ochana was in trouble but not after {7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} flopped. The {8-Hearts} and {6-Diamonds} were bricks and Ochana collected a lucky double.
