Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Aaron Johnson w/ HPT Jeremy Smith

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Mader Crosses Century Mark

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante

Phil Mader opened to 3,000 and the player in the small blind three-bet to 81,000 and Mader called. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, the unknown player bet 7,000 and Mader raised all in. The player called, showed {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} and needed helpt to survive.

Mader turned up pocket queens, the board completed {4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and his stack moved over six-figures.

Sebesta Eliminates a Friend

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante

We caught this hand on the flop of {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Spades} between Ed Sebesta and an unknown player. The player moved all in, Sebesta called and the hands were turned up.

Opponent: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Sebesta: {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

"That's the same hand you busted me with last time," she said to Sebesta. He nodded and stacked the pot.
