Flashback: Tero Laurila Crowned Champion in Record-Breaking Irish Open Main Event

Last year, a massive field of 3,233 entries assembled at the Royal Dublin Society for the 2024 Irish Open €1,150 Main Event. The tournament set a new record for the Irish Open and absolutely smashing the guaranteed prize pool of €1,000,000 by creating a prize pool of €3,152,175.

However, as with any other tournament, there could only be one person left standing at the end. Over four long days of poker action, it was Day 3 chipleader Tero Laurila who won the iconic Irish Open trophy and took home €292,685 after a three-way deal.

Laurila defeated Ireland’s Hiep Ninh after a relatively short heads up battle, as the blinds had been reduced from 60 to 20 minutes after the deal. Ninh, who plays almost exclusively in Dublin, took home the larger sum of €335,636 for his efforts due to having a massive chip lead when the deal was made. The final person involved in the deal was the 21-year-old Mark Johnston, who is just dipping his toes in the waters of professional poker and walked away with €232,685 for third place.

McLaughlin Flips Pavanic to Rail

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Tomislav Pavanic had committed his stack of 45,000 from the small blind and was called by Ruairi McLaughlin in early position.

Ruairi McLaughlin: KQ

Pavanic stood up as the KQ9 flop appeared but sat back down when he noticed he had a flush draw. The 5 turn helped neither player, while the Q river upgraded McLaughlin to a full house, securing the pot.

The 38J52 board brought no help for Lepore, eliminating him some 25 spots away from the money.

Simpson Wins Three-Bet Pot as Bubble Looms

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

Richard Frey raised to 13,000 in middle position and was three-bet to 30,000 by Ian Simpson in the hijack. It folded back to Frey, who put in a call to the 10K4 flop.

Simpson continued for 20,000, which Frey check-called. The 3 turn and 5 river were checked to showdown, where Frey tabled A9 for ace-high.

Simpson had also missed his flush with Q10, but his pair of tens was good enough to rake in the pot as fewer than ten eliminations remained before the money.

Noonan's "Act" Puts Sinclair in Tank

Level 18 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Cameron Sinclair and James Noonan had arrived on the 6102107 river, where Sinclair checked from the hijack to Noonan on the button.

Noonan then put Sinclair all-in for 115,000, making Sinclair deliberate for several minutes.

"I really don't know what to do, and your drunken act is not helping things," Sinclair stated to Noonan.

Eventually, the clock was called on Sinclair, and he mucked his cards towards the end of his countdown as Noonan rewareded the fold by showing his J9 for a flush.
