The Other Brenes

We join the flop in a heads-up pot involving Alex Brenes. With four cards out on the board, it reads {8-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {7-Spades}. Brenes' lone opponent is first to act, and he bets out 700. Brenes thinks for a moment before making the call.

Fifth street comes the {A-Spades}. Once more, Brenes sees his opponent lead out, this time for 1,000 chips. More quickly this time, Brenes again calls. His opponent turns over {J-Spades} {J-Hearts}, but Brenes shows the winning {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}, drawing a puzzled look from his opponent. With that little pot, Brenes has chipped his way up to 12,500.

So Long, Sabat

Eddy Sabat - Eliminated
Eddy Sabat - Eliminated
Eddy Sabat has just been eliminated, despite jumping out to an early double up at the start of the day.

In his final hand, he held {Q-?} {10-?}, and was tangling heads up. The flop revealed {J-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {5-Spades}, and both players checked.

The turn came the {2-Clubs}, and Sabat called a bet.

The last card off was the {6-Clubs}. Again, the unknown opponent bet out, this time with 3,000 chips. Sabat had just 5,000 left, and he moved all in and was quickly called. His opponent tabled the winning {Q-?} {J-?}, spelling the end for Eddy.

Break it Up

The clock has been paused, and the players are on a 10-minute break. At the four-hour mark, it appears that PokerStars own Victor Ramdin is in the chip lead. He has tripled his starting stack, and sits now with 31,000.

Tough Going for Boeree

Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree has been finding it tough to get anything going so far today. In a recent pot, she was in the small blind, and four players, including Humberto Brenes saw a cheap flop.

It came {3-Clubs} {K-Spades} {9-Hearts}, and all four players checked.

The turn was the {K-Hearts} and Boeree led out with 700 chips. The big blind and Brenes both folded, but she got action from the opponent in middle position.

Fifth street brought the {A-Spades}. Boeree paused for a minute before checking, and her opponent quickly announced, "All in." Boeree looked a bit flustered as she instantly slid her cards into the muck.

It's slow going, but Liv is still in decent shape with 6,000 chips.

Teaching a Pro

Ramdin Listens to an Implied Odds Lesson
Ramdin Listens to an Implied Odds Lesson
Between hands a moment ago, and while getting a massage, Victor Ramdin got a rise out of his table with an interesting question.

"Guys, can someone explain to me what implied odds are? I'm not joking. I just play poker, I don't know what implied odds means."

The table glanced at Ramdin, with some of them chuckling under their breath, but he re-iterated, "I'm serious, I have no idea."

Table mate Carter Gill took a moment to explain what implied odds were, with Ramdin nodding in understanding. He seemed satisfied with the explanation, and returned to his cards and his neck rub.

It's not every day you can give a poker lesson to Victor Ramdin.

Doubling De La Guardia

Jose De La Guardia picked his spot, moving all in from the button for his last 3,350. The small blind passed, but from the big blind, Maria Mayrinck said, "I gotta call." Indeed she did match the bet, putting De La Guardia's tournament life on the line.

Showdown:

De La Guardia: {4-Spades} {4-Clubs}
Mayrinck: {A-Spades} {J-Clubs}

The board ran out {5-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {5-Clubs}. De La Guardia takes down the pot with a full house, earning a double up to just under 7,000. "Nice hand," said Mayrinck with a shrug. She has taken a little step back to 13,500.
