LAPT San José Main Event

Day 1 Completed

Day 1 Concludes

Rob Woodcock Bagging Up
Rob Woodcock Bagging Up
With the clock ticking down to 00:00, play has come to a close on Day 1 of the PokerStars.net LAPT San Jose.

To start the day, 219 runners filed into their seats, led by a number of notable pros. PokerStars' own Humberto Brenes, Victor Ramdin, Andre Akkari, Alexandre Gomes, and Maria Mayrinck were all in attendance, but none of them survived to play tomorrow. Among the other big names who failed to escape the first day were Edward Sabat, Liv Boeree, David Plastik, Stephen Chidwick, and Alex Brenes. In fact, all but 38 of the initial entrants have seen their all-ins end up putting them all out today. Full end-of-day tallies will be posted in the "Chip Counts" tab as soon as they are made available to us later tonight.

As the chips are bagged up, it's Rob Woodcock who takes the overnight lead, dumping 181,300 chips into his barely-big-enough thick plastic bag. Hot on his heels is Ryan Fee, who was sitting directly to Woodcock's right. Fee bagged 114,000 chips, and was over the 100-big-blind mark from Level 4 onward.

Play resumes with the remaining 38 players tomorrow at high noon local time. We look forward to seeing you right back here as we whittle our way down to the final table. Thank you for following along with us today, and we hope you'll be back tomorrow for Day 2!

A New Leader Emerges

A player at Table 22 got all his chips in the middle preflop holding {9-?} {9-?}. Big stack Rob Woodcock looked him up, showing down {A-?} {Q-?} after making the call.

The flop was dry for Woodcock, but he managed to spike an {A-?} on the turn, spelling the end for yet another player. With that victory, Woodcock has taken a massive chip lead over the field, sitting now with 155,000!

Another Pro Falls

Alexandre Gomes
Alexandre Gomes
Alexandre Gomes has just become the latest casualty of Day 1. Working with {A-Spades} {10-Spades} and a short stack, he ended up all in before the flop. He was in trouble though, at risk for his tournament life against his opponent's {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}.

The board came down a dramatic {A-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}. Gomes made two pair, but that ten on the river also filled in his opponent's straight, spelling the end for the PokerStars pro.

Gomes was up and down today, active in many pots. He was healthy for much of the day but has been slipping steadily since the dinner break. After his exit, Gomes joined fellow Brazilian pros Andre Akkari and Maria Mayrinck, all three of whom are now spectators on the rail.

Bye, Bye, Brenes

Alex Brenes - Eliminated
Alex Brenes - Eliminated
Alex Brenes was all in preflop holding {9-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}, and he was called down by an opponent who held {A-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}, and who had Brenes slightly covered.

The flop was dry for both players, coming {6-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {3-Hearts}. Lightning struck for Brenes on the turn though, as the {10-Clubs} vaulted him into the lead. It wasn't meant to be though. The {J-Diamonds} peeled off on fifth street, robbing Brenes of the remainder of his chips.

Alex Brenes was the runner-up in the last LAPT event, last season's finale in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Though he outlasted brother Humberto today, Alex will fail to match that second-place effort this time around, as he is relinquished to the rail late in Day 1.

Double or Nothing for Vasquez

Joel Micka started things with a raise from late position, and action passed around to Bolivar Vasquez in the blinds. He moved all in for an additional 13,450, and Micka quickly called, having his opponent covered.

Showdown:
Micka: {5-Diamonds} {5-Spades}
Vasquez: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}

The board ran out safe for the all-in player, as it came {A-?} {2-?} {A-?} {7-?} {6-?}. Vasquez notches a nice double-up, and he now sits with just over 30,000.

The Man From Down Under Goes Under

The lone Aussie Will Mitchell was down to his last 8,000 chips, and they all went in holding {A-?} {Q-?}. He was looked up by a single opponent who held {A-?} {6-?}. Unfortunately for Mitchell, his opponent improved to overtake and eventually eliminate him from the field. Mitchell seemed quite dejected in his plight as he made his exit from the tournament room.

Gomes Pays a Fee

Ryan Fee
Ryan Fee
We pick up the action on the flop in a heads-up contest between big stack Ryan Fee and PokerStars pro Alexandre Gomes. The board shows {3-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{A-Clubs}, and there's just under 5,000 in chips already in the pot.

On said flop, Fee leads out with a bet of 3,250. Gomes goes into the tank for a few moments before raising to 9,200. Fee calls.

Fourth street brings the {Q-Spades}, and both players check this time.

The last card off is the {4-Diamonds}. Fee again passes, prompting Gomes to take another little session in the tank. Finally, he counts out a bet of 12,600, sliding it neatly into the middle of the table. That brings Fee to a pause, and he asks for Gomes' remaining count while he ponders. "Maybe twenty-five," says the pro.

With that, Fee says, "I call?" in more of a questioning tone than a sure thing. He was right though, as Gomes uncaps his cards and slides them into the muck. Fee slams down {A-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}, and he earns another nice pot. With that, he has chipped his way up to 110,000, becoming the first player to cross over the century mark.
