Day 1a Completed

Day 1a Complete

Day 1a chip leader = Jaime Ateneloff
Day 1a chip leader = Jaime Ateneloff
With 3:43 minutes remaining in Level 11, Day 1a was paused with 27 players remaining. They each advanced to Day 2 which will be played out on Saturday.

140 runners played on Day 1a of the $5,200 buy-in PokerStars.net LAPT Mar del Plata otherwise known as the "Happy City" to local Argentinians. How could anyone be sad with miles of beaches and a handful of casinos, not to mention all those leggy models mingling around the tournament area?

The field was peppered with a handful of Team PokerStars Pros and sponsored players such as Boris Becker. Unfortunately for Becker, his fiancee Lilly Kerssenberg outlasted the tennis legend when he busted out in the early levels. The stylish Kerssenberg found herself at Chris Moneymaker's table and busted out soon after.

Maria 'Maridu' Mayrinck, a Team PokerStars Pro from Brazil was one of the early casualties, while Chris Moneymaker struggled early on because every single player in the room was gunning for him. Although Moneymaker quickly adjusted and went deep into the night, but he busted out around midnight and failed to advance to Day 2.

Three South American model/actresses were also in the mix on Day 1a. They included Vanessa Machado and Angelita Feijo from Brazil and Geraldine Neumann from Argentina. Sadly, none of the former models advanced to Day 2.

Shortly after the dinner break, Jaime Ateneloff emerged as the chip leader. The retired businessman from Uruguay became the first player to surpass the 100,000 chip mark. He had to hold off the young gun from Maltazan, Mexico named Jorge Landazuri De Los Rios. One of the members of the Costa Rican press dubbed Jorge "the Latin Kid Poker." And yes, the 19-year old kid barely looked old enough to gain entrance in the casino, let alone challenge Ateneloff for the chip lead. When Day 1a ended, Jaime Ateneloff finished up with 108,400 and the overall chip lead. Jorge Landazuri De Los Rios ended Day 1a with almost 96,300 in chips.

Day 1b will commence at Noon local time on Friday (GMT -3). Check back in with PokerNews.com for live coverage and videos.

Martha Herrera celebrating her double up to stay alive
Martha Herrera, from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico made the final table of the LAPT Nuevo Vallarta. She had an average stack for most of the afternoon until she got short around dinner time. At one point, she was all in for her tournament life with {Q-?} {J-?}. She was all ready to leave the tournament area, when she spiked a Jack on the river to double up. She hung on since then and managed to be one of the 27 players on Day 1a who advanced to Day 2.

Charles-Alexandre Sylvestre

We're down to 28 players, so with one more elimination play will conclude for the night. The most recent elimination was Charles-Alexandre Sylvestre, who was eliminated by Eduardo Santos. The money went in before the flop and Santos' pocket sevens held and kept the lead against Sylvestre's pocket threes.
